Sports Lady Comets face tough scheduleSoVaNow.com / March 08, 2010
Halifax County High School varsity softball has a scrimmage Wednesday against Randolph Henry, as the Comets begin to get serious about preparations for the 2010 spring season. The Comet softball season starts Monday, March 15, at Heritage. The Comets travel to Dan River on March 17 and then have a doubleheader at Albemarle March 20. HCHS is on the road for its March schedule. The Comets open at home April 2 with Tunstall. Comet head coach Melanie Saunders said the Comets have been practicing for two weeks, and Friday was only the second time the squad had been able to get outside. “We’re dealing with it. We’re going in, we’re trying to get a lot of conditioning in, work on a lot of drills and come out here and try to get as much live hitting as we can on days we can get out,” said Saunders. HCHS has a core group of six returnees, with Stephanie Clark back for her senior season to lead the pitching effort. Samantha Gibson will also help with the pitching. Dalyn Hall had pitched for the jayvees, but she did not return, due to back problems. “We’ve got two. We’re going to work with it and not put all the pressure on them, and make the defense play behind them,” said Saunders. The team captains are Jessie Bagbey, Clark and Johanna Spencer. “We’re really looking for them to provide a lot of leadership, which they’re doing already. We’ve practiced some with the jayvee and trying to get them on the same page with us. We’re looking to move people up and down in the lineup from jayvee to varsity as needed. We’re just looking to do a lot of things this year with these younger kids who are coming up,” said Saunders. Saunders expects another challenging season in the district, citing Franklin County and PH-Roanoke as particularly tough opponents. The Comets reached the regional semifinals last season, before losing to Battlefield. That club will show up early in the Comet slate, before Halifax dives into district action. “This is the toughest (early non-district slate) we’ve had,” said Saunders. “We’re playing Battlefield and Mountain View (before the district). “We’re going to a tournament in Albemarle. We’re playing Tunstall, Dan River, Person County. This is by far the toughest pre-district lineup we’ve had. It’s only going to make us better and make us more prepared when we do hit district, and hopefully advance on after that,” said Saunders. Halifax Sports
