The loudspeakers at the Day Complex blared out the Lynyrd Skynyrd classic, ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, which was appropriate for the moment.The Halifax County Junior Dixie Boys are headed to Enterprise, Ala., for World Series play after cruising to the state title Tuesday at the Day Complex . The Junior Dixie Boys clinched the state title with a 12-8 win over Madison Heights. Previously, HC downed Bedford Metro, 13-3, on Monday, while Madison Heights cruised past Timberlake, 7-1, setting the stage for Tuesday’s title game. Earlier, HC defeated Timberlake, 11-0, on Sunday, after a 14-1 win over Madison Heights on Saturday and a 10-0 shutout of Buckingham on the opening night of action. HC 12, Madison Heights 8 Justin Womack pitched five and two-thirds of an inning, while Ryan Powell and Seth Elliott (one and a thirds innings) finished up. Elliott was particularly effective shutting down Madison Heights in the closing innings en route to the title. HC got one run in the first inning, two in the second, one in the third, three in the fifth, and two in the sixth. The locals established some distance with three runs in the seventh. S. Elliott blasted a key, two-run homer in the sixth, scoring Tyler Stephens, who had singled. In the seventh, Tyler Wall reached on an error, and then the locals used a sacrifice and a hit batsman to get runners on base. Ryan Powell singled and Will Harris got a run home on a groundout. Stephens followed with a two-run single to spark the inning. Wall lined a two-run single in the fifth as HC had late offense in the dramatic win over Madison Heights. Madison Heights got a run in the first, one in the third, and four in the fourth. But Madison Heights was held scoreless in the fifth and only had two in the sixth, as HC proved more consistent offensively in the late innings. HC finished unbeaten in state tournament play. Head Coach Walter Powell said, “We came out here and have been playing real good baseball this weekend. I’m real proud of the boys. “We seemed to be deeper in pitching than everybody else. On top of that, I just want to say that the parents … are real dedicated to these kids playing baseball. Most of these kids have been playing ball year-round for the last few years. “We could see it about three years ago, amongst these several leagues, that something special was going to come together when they got 13,” said Powell. Powell noted, “it was an all-out effort from all of these kids. Everybody, including my bench, came in and produced.” Elliott had a huge game, delivering a critical two-run homer when HC trailed. “It turned us around,” said Powell. Elliott also proved effective on the mound, closing out the win. Womack pitched well, and then Elliott saved the win. Powell said the local all-stars start Aug. 1 against North Carolina in World Series action. “I think if we play good, sound fundamental baseball, there’s no limit to what we can do,” said Powell. HC finished with 11 hits in the win, while leaving seven on base. Stephens walked, singled and doubled and finished with two runs scored. Elliott doubled, singled and had the two-run blast and scored twice.Wall doubled and singled and scored twice. Halifax 13, Bedford Metro 3 HC got two runs in the first and then added four runs on three hits in the second. The locals added two in the third, one in the fourth, and four in the sixth. HC finished with 11 hits. Stephens had three walks and a single and scored four runs, including a run in the sixth when he scampered home on a passed ball. Elliott also cracked a three-run double in the third to help send HC to the lopsided win on Monday. HC 11, Timberlake 0 HC had no trouble here, collecting 10 hits in the shutout win. Timberlake never clicked offensively and finished with two hits. The big inning for HC came in the third, a seven-run, five-hit rollout for the locals. Ryan Powell hit leadoff for HC, finishing with a triple and a single and two runs scored. Stephens singled twice, walked and scored twice. Michael Watts singled twice and scored one run.
