The News & Record / June 30, 2009
Halifax will meet the east sub district in a best of three series to decide the district 2 Dixie Youth minors title.

South Hill and Brunswick met last night in the championship game, with the winner moving on to face Halifax. Halifax (3-0 in sub-district play) will open the best of three series tomorrow night at home, starting at seven p.m. The second game is set for Saturday, and a third game, if necessary, would be played Sunday.

Head coach Raymond Duffer, celebrating the sub-district title, said his club is playing as a team, featuring strong pitching. Halifax has also hit well and produced terrific defense.

Halifax claimed the sub-district with a 12-4 win over Halifax County South Monday night.

Halifax clearly proved itself the best team in the sub-district tournament. Halifax scored three runs on five hits in the second inning, five more on six hits in the third, and one run on three hits in the fourth.

After a scoreless fifth, Halifax rolled on to the sub-district title after a three-run, four-hit sixth.

Tylik Powell did a terrific job on the mound for Halifax. He scattered seven hits and fanned six. Powell only had one bumpy inning, when he allowed three runs on four hits in the HCS second.

Meanwhile, Halifax had more than enough offensive balance to soar past HCS. Powell did well in the leadoff spot. He singled twice, doubled and scored three runs.

Tyler Duffer, batting in the no. 2 spot, hit four singles ˆ part of a 19 hit outburst ˆ and scored twice.

Troy Ferrell singled three times and scored twice. Andrew Abbott doubled, sparking sixth inning offense for Halifax.

Evan Hardy singled twice and scored two runs. Brayden Moore singled twice and scored two runs.

Halifax got its offensive momentum in gear early, rolling out to an 8-3 lead after three innings.

HCS used three pitchers, Trevor Rice, Austin Busse and Ahmed Manigo, to try and stop Halifax, to no avail.

Dustin Watts homered in the sixth, while Trevor Rice tripled in the third. Spencer Gordon belted a double in the three-run second, but HCS did not have enough offensive strength to keep pace with Halifax.

SUNDAY ACTION: HCS eliminated South Boston with a 12-1 win.

HCS scored two runs on two hits in the first, four runs on three hits in the second and six hits on four runs in the third as the game ended early.

Adam Throckmorton pitched well for South, tossing a four-hitter. He fanned three.

Michael Gray sparked South with a double and a triple and two runs scored. Busse also sliced a double and scored. Adam Throckmorton scored twice. Patrick Sally singled and scored twice.
