Sports HA Darlings to face Motley for district crownThe News & Record / July 01, 2009
Halifax American downed Halifax National, 22-7, to advance to a title showdown with Motley last night in district Darlings Dixie softball action.The Americans scored eight runs in the first inning, nine in the second, and five in the third. The Nationals got five runs in the first and two in the second, but went scoreless the rest of the way. As for the Nationals’ offense, Rose Spainhour had two. MacKenzie Lawter, Katie Cole, Lainey Jones, Kasey Clayton, Deaja Richardson and Madison Vargas had one apiece. Halifax American got two hits apiece from Karina Velazquez, Kayla Waller, Madison Gunn, Carol Fears, Kaylan Melvin and Mollie Slate. The Americans got one apiece from Aliyah Chandler, Veanundra Winn and Hailie Lawhorn. Halifax American remains unbeaten in the Darlings’ action. In Monday night Darlings’ action, Halifax National roared past Brookneal, 22-16. Rose Spainhour, Jessica Auld and Kasey Clayton had three hits apiece. Mackenzie Lawter, Sydney Wilborn, Alicia Spencer and Deaja Richardson had two hits apiece. Katie Cole, Amanda Coleman, Casey Pulliam, Lainey Jones and Madison Varges had one hit apiece. Lawter, Clayton and Coleman each homered for the HN all-stars. In the sixth game of the tournament, Halifax American shaded Motley, 19-14. Halifax American got three hits from Savanna Cabiniss, while Aliyah Chandler, Madison Gunn, Carol Fears and Mollie Slate had two each. Karina Velazquez, Kaylan Melvin, Hailie Lawhorn and Jeri Lynn Tyler had one each. In earlier action Sunday, Motley downed Brookneal, 18-2. Halifax National also defeated Charlotte County, 20-9, in the fourth game of this district tournament. The Nationals got out to a strong start, outscoring Charlotte 8-2 after the first inning. HN added two more runs in the second, seven in the third and three in the fourth. Charlotte County could not keep pace. As for the hitting, Lawter and Auld had three hits apiece, while Cole, Spainhour and Spencer had two each. Wilborn, Clayton, Coleman, Pulliam, Richardson and Jones had one hit apiece. |
