Sports Good to go: Four Dixie teams head for division World SeriesThe News & Record / July 30, 2009
Four Halifax County Dixie teams — including one baseball and three softball teams — head to their respective World Series in two states this weekend. The Halifax County Dixie Junior Boys are in Enterprise, Ala. Meanwhile, three local Dixie Softball teams — the Dixie Debs, the Halifax American Darlings and the Halifax American Belles — are in World Series play at Sumter, S.C. DIXIE JUNIOR BOYS: The local all-stars start Saturday night at 7 p.m. against North Carolina, an all-star team from the Hope Mills area. The World Series is being played at Enterprise, Ala. This team is 5-0 in the postseason so far, and head coach Wally Powell hopes to play strong, fundamental baseball with good pitching and defense. “Hopefully, we’ll score a few runs, too,” added Powell. Powell has a variety of pitchers to depend on, with different styles. Seth Elliott and Justin Womack are the primary starters, and Powell has a strong relief corps as needed. Powell wants the all-stars to enjoy themselves and play hard, while keeping their proper focus at the World Series. It’s the first time for these players at the World Series. -- The local Dixie Debs will play South Carolina Saturday morning at 10 am, with veteran coach Vic Hudson leading this all-star contingent. The Debs are 5-0 so far in the postseason, behind strong hitting and defense. The Debs will look to get consistency throwing strikes from pitchers Whitney Womack, Keisha Crowder and Heather Hudson. The Debs allowed just five runs in five games at the state tournament, and this club has strong hitting. Hudson and the coaching staff are counting on a stout offense as the ticket to a deep postseason run. -- The Halifax American Darlings are leaving tomorrow morning, headed to the Palmetto State. The Darlings, with head coach Matt Gunn leading the team, start Saturday at 1 p.m. against Louisiana. The Darlings are 9-1 so far. The leading hitters include Madison Gunn, Aliyah Chandler, Carol Fears and Kaylin Melvin, Mollie Slate, and Savanna Cabaniss. “We’ve got to hit the ball and play good defense,” said Gunn, directing a World Series effort for the first time ever as a head coach. “I think we’ll be fine if we hit the ball,” said Gunn The Darlings will meet either Florida or South Carolina in second round action at 10:30 am Sunday. -- The Halifax American Belles are also headed to the World Series. The Belles, under the capable leadership of head coach Barbara Lacks, play South Carolina at noon. The Belles are very strong and deep this year. The team heads to the World Series with six strong pitchers (Dalyn Hall, Jill Trickey, Jennifer Lacks, Kate Bane, Meg Bane and Briana Pierce. HA has a strong infield with redundancy at most every position. The team should be strong at the bat with big hitters, base hitters and slappers. The team has good speed on the bases with Taylor Mosley, B. Pierce, Kiana Pierce, Verlisha Brandon and Hall all speed demons on the base. |
