Darlings 1-1 in WS play, face elimination

SoVaNow.com / August 03, 2009
The Virginia state champion Darlings are 1-1 so far in World Series action in Sumter, S.C.

Virginia defeated Florida, 5-4, to stay alive. The local champions were scheduled to meet Arkansas Sunday night.

Against Florida both teams had good defense, and the local American Darlings won the game in their last at-bat.

The local Darlings trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth. Veaundra Winn got the Darlings started with a single, and Savanna Cabaniss delivered a hit for the game-tying score.

Hailie Lawhorn then delivered the game-winning RBI, scoring Cabaniss.

“We picked it up today. We were a much better team today than … against Louisiana on Saturday,” said head coach Matt Gunn after the win over Florida.

Winn also turned in an excellent game at third, playing error-free baseball. Aliyah Chandler had a homer in the first inning, and the local Darlings later had widespread contributions.

On Saturday the local American Darlings lost to Louisiana, 8-5.

Gunn said the local team beat themselves with errors and missed opportunities at the plate.
