Sports Dabbs earns AA nominationSoVaNow.com / March 08, 2010
Halifax County High School senior varsity basketball player Deshon Dabbs has been nominated for the 2010 McDonald’s All-American basketball team.Dabbs is one of 31 nominees from the state of Virginia for the McDonald’s All-American squad, and part of a larger pool nationwide. He was the lone player nominated from the Western Valley district. “We’re proud of him,” said Comet athletics director Allen Lawter yesterday. “I think its positive any time you have kids recognized like that.” Lawter said it’s the first time a Comet athlete has been nominated for the McDonald’s All-American team since the beginning of his tenure as AD at Halifax County. Dabbs, who led HCHS to a 12-8 mark before losing in the Western Valley district semifinals at GW-Damville, finished 22nd in the state in scoring. He averaged 18.4 ppg for the Comets and had a terrific senior season. HCHS varsity basketball coach Lynn Ramage said yesterday Dabbs would get a spot in a preliminary McDonald’s all-star game. (The finalists for the 2010 team were announced in February.) Ramage said the nomination is a great honor for Dabbs, HCHS and the community, as a recognition of his hard work this past summer in off-season training, as well as a stellar senior season.
