The Halifax County High School boys’ soccer team dropped a preseason scrimmage to Heritage 6-1 Monday night, but coach Frank Shealy saw some positives.

HCHS got its lone goal in the second period, with about 25 minutes. Brandon Garner scored off an assist from Dru Henderson.

HCHS 11 shots on goal. The Comets had 12 saves, split among several netminders. Henderson, Dylan Compton and Lamar Holmes. Generally, the netminders played well.

Shealy said, “It was 1-0 at halftime. We lost goalie (Jordan) Keck, who is our goalie, in warm-ups (due to twisted wrist). Hopefully, he’ll be OK.”

The Comets experimented with some different looks. The Comet coaches were looking at game speed and where to position players.

“We played the first half and second half differently. More heavily defensive in the first half, and it worked. It was 1-0 at half.

“But we weren’t getting the offensive threats. We changed things in the second half to pick that up. I think we outshot them in the second half. It looked like everything they were getting was in the box and on goal,” said Shealy.

HCHS was set for another scrimmage, at Dan River yesterday.

The Comets start the regular season against Bluestone March 17, at the HCHS field.

JAYVEES: The Comets defeated Heritage in a jayvee scrimmage, winning 6-4.

HCHS has a deep, young team and played very well.

Coach Casey Bomar said, “We moved the ball well and obviously saw a lot of things we can work on, being a scrimmage game. We tried some new things. We passed the ball and moved the ball around.”

Bomar added, “We’re a small team, so we’re definitely looking at working on our aggressiveness and winning all our 50-50 balls. We spread the ball around well, had a lot of different kids scoring.”

Six Comets scored, including Tyler Fallen, Tyler Garner, Collin Kashmer, Jason Dennis, Nick Zanarini and Corey Conner.

“It was an experimental game. We were trying some things,” said Bomar.
