Boys second, girls third in WVD swim tourney

The Comet swim teams competed in the WVD meet Thursday, with the boys’ team placing second in the district and the girls finishing third. Franklin County won the boys’ meet with 137 points, with the Comets a close second at 129.

PH-Roanoke was third, with 83 points. GW-Danville was fourth, with 72 points and Fleming was fifth, with 30 points.

FCHS also won the girls’ title, with 135 points. PH-Roanoke was second, with 123, and HCHS coming home third, with 106 points.

GW was fourth, with 71 points and Fleming placed last, with 28.

Jordan Keck captured the district title in the 100-yard butterfly, with a time of 1:06.28. James Popek also made the regionals with a third place effort, with a time of 1:11.47.

The Comets placed three swimmers in the 100-yard free, all headed to the regionals. Zak Ford was second in this event in 56.91, with Henderson fourth in 59.32 and Brandon Garner eighth at 1:02.83.

The Comet 200-yard free relay team was third, with a time of 1:48.34. The relay squad included Brandon Garner, Delontae Miller, J. Popek and D. Henderson.

HCHS had a 2-3 finish in the 100-yard back. Nick Zanarini was second in 1:19.51 and Elliott third in 1:19.89.

Keck placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:13.98, good for a regional spot. Fulcher was fourth in 1:18.04. Popek was sixth in 1:29.23 and Austin Robbins seventh, in 1:31.56. All qualified for the regionals.

The Comets were second in the 400-yard free relay, with a time of 3:59.60. The relay squad included Ford, Garner, Popek and Keck.

The Comets won the 200-yard meter relay, with a time of 1:56.16. That district title winning relay team included Jordon Keck, Zak Ford, Hunter Fulcher and Dru Henderson. All are regional bound.

Taylor Elliott of the Comets finished third in the 200 free, in 2:27.69, and qualified for the regionals.

HCHS had two regional qualifiers in the 200 IM, including Z. Ford, third, with a time of 2:34.35 and fifth place swimmer Hunter Fulcher, with a time of 2:52.22.

Henderson of the Comets finished second in the 50-yard free in 25.27 and is region bound. Brandon Garner of the Comets just missed placing in this event, finishing ninth in 26.64.

On the girls’ side, Caliegh Hughes won the district title in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:19.06, qualifying for the regionals. Melissa Essig was second with a time of 1:19.49, also region bound. The Comets’ Peyton Ferguson was fifth in this event, with a region qualifying time of 1:26.61.

HCHS also had a district championship relay squad in the 400-yard free relay. The team finished the event in 4:44.88, with all of these girls region bound. The relay team included Jordan Miller, Hughes, Johanna Spencer and Kelsey White.

The Comets 200 yard medley relay team finished third, with a time of 2:21.19. That team included Melissa Essig, Rebecca Snead, Jessica Conner and Morgan Farley.

Johanna Spencer of the Comets was fourth in the 200-yard free, with a time of 2:43.52. Emily Conner also qualified for the regional with her eighth place time of 3:00.35.

Jordan Miller took third in the 200 IM, with a time of 2:48.74. She earned a region berth.

Halifax went out 5-6-8 in the 50 free. Kelsey White was fifth in 30.41, while Hughes was sixth in 30.46. Morgan Farley of the Comets was eighth in 30.73.

Shelby Rutledge of the Comets was sixth in the 100-yard butterfly, in 1:33.84. Jessica Conner was seventh in 1:34.67, and both are region bound.

K. White was fifth in the 100-yard free in 1:08.48, and she made the regionals.

Spencer placed third in the 500 free in 7:25.11, and is headed to the regionals. Emily Conner was eighth in 8:43.17, and also earned a regional spot.

The Comets 200 yard girls free relay team earned a regional spot with a second place effort in 2:02.29. That team included Farley, White, Miller and Hughes.

HCHS also had a 6-7-8 finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, with all of those girls moving on to the region. Miller was sixth in 1:26.47, while Snead was seventh in 1:28.41 and J. Conner eighth in 1:30.22.
