Sports ‘15 hungry guys’SoVaNow.com / March 08, 2010
The Halifax County High School varsity baseball team worked through a variety of drills Friday, grateful for the chance to get on the field in pre-season preparations.“We’ve got 15 hungry guys,” said head coach Kelvin Davis. “Since day one, we’ve seen a lot of good attitudes. We’ve seen some improvement. HCHS has a long way to go, but Davis noted, “each and every day that we come out here, we see a lot of improvement. And this time of the year, that’s what we want to see. With the attitudes and improvement, I think we’re going to be successful if we keep this up.” Pitching, of course, is key. Davis has seen the pitchers throw inside and on the bullpen mounds. “We’ve got to get them in game situations and see how they fare from there,” said Davis. The Comets have a bevy of left-handed hurlers, including Tyler Long, Dylan Sons, Ryan Puryear, and Nick Rouse. HCHS has three right-handers, including Luke Griles, Patches Trent and Aron Puryear. The Comets appear to be fairly deep in pitching. “I think it is, but we’re going to try to do is see which one can fight through the fire. That’s what it’s going to take. We all know that if you want to go deep in this thing, you’re going to have to have a pitcher that wants the ball night after night. At this time in the season, that’s all we’re trying to do is prepare them. We’re going to go out there and let them do what they’re capable of doing. “I don’t know exactly who’s considered starters or middle relievers, or closers,” said Davis. “It’s a work in progress right now.” HCHS has a highly touted college prospect in Long. Davis adopted a cautionary note there. “I don’t want to put too much pressure on him. I want him to come out here and do what he’s capable of doing,” said Davis, who wants to avoid distractions regarding this prospect. The emphasis is for Long to “do the little things,” said Davis. “He’s going to be successful if he does those.” HCHS has an interesting pre-district schedule, including Garden City, N.Y. and Mineola, N.Y. The Comet baseball team opens with J.F. Webb away on March 16, before a two-game home set with Park View March 18 and Jefferson Forest on March 23. “We’ve got some good quality teams we have to play,” said Davis. The Comets scrimmage Heritage this week. Halifax Sports
