Newspapers across the Commonwealth will be spilling blood, guts and barrels of ink this General Assembly session to beat back legislation that would gut the requirement that public notices be published in newspapers. Perhaps this would be a good time to invoke an editorial standard, the disclosure of self-interest.

The latest blow

How quickly things in life can change: Not so long ago, our neighbor to the east, Mecklenburg County, shined brightly (relatively speaking) as a beacon of economic vitality in southern Virginia. Of course, a lot of this had to do with its two lakes, Buggs Island and Lake Gaston, but there was also a nice string of expansions by major employers in the area: Microsoft last year, Hewlett-Packard (née EDS) a few years prior to that, plus a handful of new manufacturing concerns popping up here and there. If not for the depressed state of the real estate market, you could make the case that Mecklenburg was well on its way to greater things, ahead of schedule for the rest of Southside.

Maybe it’s time to rethink the notion that any industry — even the government-supported and –sponsored kind — can be truly recession-proof.

The object of these suits is to effect a sale of real property owned by the Respondents identified in the Bills in Equity by which these actions were commenced, in order to satisfy Complainants liens for unpaid real property taxes.
And Affidavits having been made and filed that Joyce Owen White is not believed to be a resident of the state of Virginia, and that there are, or may be, other persons who, as heirs, devisees, assignees, successors in title, creditors or otherwise, of Hattie L. Owen (deceased), John A. Owen (deceased), John A. Owen, Jr. (deceased), and Joyce Owen White who are, or may be, interested in the subject matter to be disposed of in these suits, whose names, ages and addresses are unknown, and who are proceeded against by the general description of Parties Unknown.
It is hereby ORDERED that the Respondents appear before this Court on or before May 31, 2011, which date is more than twenty-four (24) days from the date of entry of this Order of Publication, and do what is necessary to protect their interests herein.
It is further ORDERED that the foregoing portion of this Order be published once a week for two (2) successive weeks in The News & Record and The Gazette-Virginian, each of which is a newspaper having general circulation in the Town of Halifax, Virginia, pursuant to Virginia Code Section 8.01-317.
