Unique character

SoVaNow.com / February 11, 2010
Dear Viewpoint:

South Boston, thank you so much.

Since moving here in December of 2006, I have experienced a thousand acts of kindness. Most recently, I suffered several medical emergencies over the holidays. Not only did I receive exceptional care at our local hospital’s emergency room and cardiac unit, but I remember the professionalism as they prepared me for transport and emergency surgery at Duke. As they worked, I thought what an incredible service being provided on Christmas Day.

Not to be melodramatic, but I particularly thought of the lives saved because our local health-care workers were not on vacation; my life was certainly saved.

I am particularly thankful to the surgeon who raced from Raleigh/Durham to perform an emergency procedure on me—and received a speeding ticket.

While in the hospital, I received many messages, letters, cards, flowers and prayers from friends and colleagues in South Boston—but I also received many heart-felt messages from perfect strangers. Each act of kindness helped me a great deal at a time when my greatest challenge was simply to put one foot in front of the other.

Over the past three years, I have seen people helping others and providing support in countless ways. What I personally experienced over the holidays is not the exception in our community, but the standard.

There is a unique character to South Boston. And I have one thing to say: Thank you.
