Dear Viewpoint:

They say that history repeats itself, in the late 30s Republicans fought Social Security tooth and nail and now here we are again not only fighting health care, but also the creation of jobs, what’s wrong with this picture?

They say it will cost too much, since when did spending money bother them? When President Bush bailed out AIG, Citibank and most of all Wall Street no one said a word, but when President Obama wanted to help the auto industry and small businesses that’s when they started to whine.

First of all if you put the people back to work at decent wages they’ll be able to pay for their own health insurance, then the only people that need a subsidized health insurance will be unemployed and the disabled as it should be.

As I see it the Republicans represent the wealthy and big business while Democrats represent the poor and handicapped, so I guess the independents represent the middle class, there are no good independent candidates to vote for (where’s Ross Perot when you need him?) So we are stuck voting for the lesser of two evils, or not voting at all.

I cannot understand why no one in Washington can figure out that a man making minimum wage pays minimum taxes too, while if they were to pay the people a decent salary they would be paying decent taxes, you know the money that makes government work. And I don’t think someone making $250,000 a year should be considered middle class, heck anyone making $100,000 a year is well off in my book.

A decent tariff on all foreign or imported goods would be nice too, they have very large tariffs on American goods overseas, wouldn’t it just be fair to reciprocate the favor? Buy Americans, it pays!

Sincerely,
Al Hoppe, Virgilina
