Opinion Put the children firstSoVaNow.com / March 12, 2010
Dear Viewpoint,Folks in Halifax County need to stand up for the children … No more good old boys clubs or politics garbage … put kids first. Our children may face classrooms with 35 students in them. How can teachers meet the individual needs of each child with an overloaded classroom and no money for instructional supplies? Everyone needs to speak up…call your school board members and let them know that we want our kids education to be a top priority. Call your board of supervisors and let them know that our kids deserve better. Do the folks at the top even know what goes on inside our schools each day? All central office employees can be replaced … most of them can retire…and their replacements will do the job for a lot less. Yes, everyone can be replaced … but let us not lose the young, energetic, talented teachers we have now to a reduction in force policy. We owe our children the best we can offer…their futures are at stake…we can’t let them down. Do the folks in Halifax County know what the top central office employees make each year in this poor rural county? Superintendent makes $157,967.00; Deputy Superintendent makes $119,000.00; Assistant Superintendent of Instruction makes $98,937.00; Chief Financial Officer makes $98,937.00; Ex.Director of Federal Programs $84,826.00; Director of Academies makes $74,500.00; Director of Special Education makes $79,536.00; Director of Transportation makes $790,286.00; Director of technology makes $75,500.00; Supervisor of food services makes $76,481.00. Does that really equal $941,267.00? Now that’s only the salary…that doesn’t include perks … How many teaching positions would that save? Call your board members…have a voice …s ave the future of our kids. Jim Barczak |
