Dear Viewpoint:In celebration of Black History Month, I recognize two prominent African Americans of Halifax County and South Boston area. William Kent, the owner and operator of Kent Funeral Home. The late Mr. Kent was the first African American to serve as mayor of South Boston. He was very supportive of the local Halifax County branch of the NAACP. He would hold the NAACP meeting in his funeral home business. Another prominent African American for Halifax County and South Boston was the late Josephine Marshall. Mrs. Marshall was the first African American woman to serve as mayor for the City of South Boston. She was a very active politician. Also we recognize the late Cora Tucker. Miss Tucker was a strong advocate for justice and equality for African American in Halifax County and South Boston area. She would attend school board meetings and board of supervisors meeting and she would speak out on various issues concerning African Americans here in South Boston and Halifax County. She also founded her own organization The Citizens for a Better America. In August of every year the CBA would have a huge gathering on the courthouse lawn in Halifax. Various speakers would attend and speak on various issues also we would march down the street of Halifax singing We shall overcome. Also the local NAACP president, the Cora Tucker Award each year to a prominent African American who is active and supportive of rights, such as the work Miss Tucker did. So as we celebrate Black History Month, let us remember the African Americans who strived to make Halifax County and South Boston a better place for all the citizens in our community and as we strive may we all be citizens for a better America.
