Our pool policy

SoVaNow.com / September 17, 2009
Dear Viewpoint:

In response to the recent questions about the YMCA pool temperature, the policy adopted by our board of directors is to align with the majority of YMCA members. Specifically, this policy is within the guidelines of YMCA of the USA Medical Advisory Committee.

Many community and YMCA pools keep their temperatures higher because they do arthritis classes in the water - and usually, warmer temperatures are better for arthritis sufferers. If arthritis classes were the principle usage for the pool, then an 85 degree temperature would be acceptable. The lap swimmers that are using the pool for exercise prefer somewhere between 78 and 82 degrees. The recommended temperature for a single use facility that caters to lap swimmers, children and elderly is closer to 82 degrees. Since we have the only public indoor pool in the County, the difficulty lies with trying to appease the majority. 83-84 degrees is our target temperature. Keeping it exact is not possible for a 150,000 gallon pool with thousands of users.

Warmer pool temperatures lead to higher energy costs and a higher pool chemical cost since bacteria grows better at the higher temperatures. When the temperature of the swimming pool is increased, many issues must be considered because of the effects on the maintenance of the pool. If the pool water temperature is higher, there will be increased water evaporation and thus the pool staff will have to remain vigilant regarding when water needs to be added. Also, increased pool water temperature means quicker build up of the dissolved solids such as deodorants, lotion, perfume etc. which the chlorine attacks in the pool water. In fact, having a higher temperature may also burn the chlorine and the agents used for pool sanitizing far more quickly. The algae growth will proliferate and increased vacuuming, and pool cleanups will be required. These effects will require increased costs to operate the pool and potentially, a less clean pool.

With that said, we strive to ensure that our pool is as clean and safe as possible. Over 3,000 members using our pool requires us to make continual adjustments which we monitor on an hourly basis. We are extremely proud of our staff and volunteers that are ensuring your YMCA is an asset that community can be proud of.

Sincerely,

Marcus M. Hargrave

YMCA C.E.O.
