Helping out Haiti

SoVaNow.com / March 04, 2010
Dear Viewpoint:

With the worrisome news of budget cuts and lay-offs in our school division, we were ever so grateful that the Parsons-Bruce Art Association donated fifty dollars toward art supplies for our “Homes for Haiti” project. To say that the project has been a success is an understatement. Our children created over 1,000 pins/magnets and the donations and orders started flooding our main office. We started out with $258.45 in supplies. Parsons-Bruce Art Association donated fifty of those dollars, a private citizen donated fifty dollars, and the school loaned the project one-hundred fifty-eight dollars. As the excitement grew from art class to art class…the orders grew too. On Monday evening our first grade students had a special musical program celebrating famous Americans and we had the pins out for donations. We collected over five hundred dollars that night alone.

To date we have received $2,251.82, with over two thousand dollars in pure profit. Children need to enjoy the arts and they had an opportunity to put that joy into action with our project. This small school in rural Virginia can make a very big contribution to those less fortunate. Even with all the budget woes we have here in Halifax County…we are in a much better situation than those in Haiti. Our children are so proud that they were able to help out in such a personal way.

I know how involved your association is in keeping the arts alive and well in our county and we certainly appreciate all you do for the citizens living here. We especially want to thank Parsons Bruce for supporting our “Homes for Haiti” project. The American Red Cross will have our pins available on March 8th and 9th during their blood mobile drives in Halifax and South Boston. Our hope is that more donations will come in at that time.

Again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for partnering this project with us.

Sincerely,
Marliss H. Barczak, Associate Principal
Cluster Springs Elementary School
