Health heroes

Dear Viewpoint:

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, there are some special people who deserve our thanks — our Southside Health District (Mecklenburg, Halifax and Brunswick Health Departments) public health heroes. In conjunction with Research!America, a non-profit advocacy alliance representing 125 million Americans, Southside Medical Reserve Corps will be marking Monday, November 23 as Public Health Thank You Day.

All too often we are unfamiliar with our public health professionals who devote their careers to keeping us healthy. These unsung heroes keep our air, food, and water clean and our families safe and healthy through research, services, and public policy actions such as seat belt and clean indoor air laws.

Public health workers make our health and safety top priorities every day. They are the quick responders to health threats like the H1N1 flu and natural disasters like this spring’s floods. Whether they are developing vaccines or checking water quality, these heroes keep major disasters from becoming catastrophic.

The Southside Medical Reserve Corp Volunteers will say thank you to public health heroes on Monday, November 23.

I hope that the all the local newspapers and businesses will join Research!America and Southside Medical Reserve Corp Volunteers in thanking these public health heroes for the important work they do.

Sincerely,

Kim Bannister, MRC Coordinator
