Woman charged with DUI, reckless driving in wreck

A 20 year old South Boston woman was charged with driving under the influence and with reckless driving - failure to maintain control following a single vehicle crash at 11 p.m. on Saturday night, June 27. Ashley R. Lewis was the driver of a 2001 Pontiac Gran Prix which veered off the left side of State Route 626, about five-tenths mile north of its intersection with State Route 360. The car continued on, striking a mailbox and several trees before coming to a halt.

Investigating Virginia Sate Trooper D. H. Hess estimated damages to the car at $5,000, and Lewis was injured and transported for treatment.

Earlier on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. a 63 year old South Boston man, Bernice G. Long was injured when the 1988 Harley Davidson motorcycle he was operating went off the right side of State Route 704 abut a half mile south of its intersection with State Route 706. Investigating Virginia State Trooper T. C. Comer placed no charges in the accident, but estimated damages to the bike at $8,000. Long was transported to Duke Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
