News Trustees to look at revised school calendar tonightSoVaNow.com / February 08, 2010
Halifax County school trustees will meet Monday at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria of Halifax County Middle School for their regular monthly session.Joe Griles, Supervisor of Instruction, will recognize members of the High School ACE team which recently won the district ACE tournament with members scheduled to participate in regional competition this past weekend (meet was postponed due to the weekend snowfall). Griles will also recognize the Digispired students. Trina Vaughan is expected to showcase FFA Week at the high school, and Superintendent of Schools Paul Stapleton will highlight February as School Board Member Appreciation Month. Deputy School Superintendent Larry Clark will discuss the school calendar concerning make-up days since local schools were closed for five days last week after two week-end snowfalls made travel dangerous. The school calendar approved last August had included March 12 as a scheduled teacher work day to be used as one make-up day with the other missed days added to the end of the school year. That calendar, Clark pointed out, was approved before the three new members of the school board took their seats on Jan. 1. Clark said he expects to review that schedule with the current members of the board who have the option of retaining it or making changes to it. “They could decide to opt for other days such as those scheduled for Easter holidays or to go longer hours,” he explained. The deputy school superintendent said one thing that must be considered is the window of time that the schools have for SOL testing and how the loss of snow days may affect that schedule. Stapleton is also expected to propose a timeline for crafting the upcoming 2010-11 school budget. Under unfinished business, trustees will consider scheduling their October school board meeting at Cluster Springs Elementary School. Tell-a-Friend | Submit a Comment 23Halifax News
