News Town may host VML workshopSoVaNow.com / March 11, 2010
South Boston Council members on Monday evening learned of an offer from the Virginia Municipal League to hold a local government community workshop in South Boston sometime in the coming weeks. The workshop will be one of several held around the state with one already scheduled for Vinton and another in Abingdon. Town clerk Jane Jones said VML officials have inquired about scheduling a meeting in South Boston, where hopefully governing body officials of Halifax County and the Town of Halifax could join with South Boston to take a look at “the practical tools for conflict management and community engagement.” Jones said South Boston has responded positively to the request, but no firm date has been set for the workshop. It is likely to take place in mid April or early May. In other business on Monday night, Town Manager Ted Daniel reported that he and Town Council members Bill Snead and Coleman Speece recently met with two officials with Comcast television. Daniel said he believes the cable company, whose franchise agreement comes up for renewal this year, will soon be offering high definition television to this area. Lack of high-definition channels is something that Council earlier complained about when a Comcast representative addressed members earlier in the fall. Snead said he still has concerns about the lack of scheduled listings that Comcast offers. For several months Snead has complained that he finds it difficult to know when a show starts and how long it runs. He added that only by surfing channels is he able to find out when ball games, races and other programs are being aired. The Town is scheduled to have another conference call with Comcast officials next week. Also on Monday night Council approved a special use permit which will allow Carroll Thomason to operate an auto, truck and boat repair business at 512 Easley Street on the condition that the business meets all fire and building codes before it begins to operate. Council also named Dave Cline to fill the Town’s position on the Regional Juvenile Group Home Commission. Cline was appointed to a four year term and will join representatives from Halifax and Mecklenburg Counties on the commission. Tell-a-Friend | Submit a Comment Halifax News
