News Retiring Community Action chief leaves ‘indelible mark’

W. E. Bill Coleman, retiring President and Chief Executive Officer of the Tri-County Community Action Agency and the Halifax County Community Federal Credit Union, was honored with a surprise retirement celebration on Saturday evening at the Bright Leaf Forum with local officials, staff and family present for the occasion.Danville Mayor Sherman Saunders, who served as Master of Ceremonies, lauded Coleman for his work at the agency over the past 42 years. It has been a great pleasure for me to know and work with Bill over the past years, said Saunders, who also works with Community Action programs. Aubrey Houghton, one of founding board members of the agency, also had only the kindest words for Coleman, with whom he has worked over the past forty plus years. Chris Lumsden, CEO of Halifax Regional Health Systems, praised Colemans work with the local hospital, as did Linda C. Owen, vice chair of the local Business and Professional Council. Board of Supervisors Chairman William Fitzgerald, South Boston Mayor Carroll Thackston and County Supervisor William B. Claiborne all added their congratulations on a job well done by Coleman. Family members, led by Colemans youngest daughter, Shernita Bethea, paid special family tributes to the retiree and his staff members made special presentations and awards to him. Bethea also acknowledged the many letters received by Coleman, lauding his work. We celebrate your indelible mark of making a difference in the lives of so many people during the past 42 years, staffers wrote.
