News Perriello Announces $8.8 Million in Stimulus Funds for Home Weatherization in 5th DistrictThe News & Record / April 23, 2009
Congressman Tom Perriello announced Thursday that nearly $8.8 million will be made available to weatherize more than 1,100 homes in the 5th District, thanks to federal funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. “Investing in home weatherization is a win-win situation because families can lower their home energy costs, which helps all consumers by taking pressure off the grid. Additionally, we can train a new green jobs workforce in energy efficiency technology,” said Perriello. “These funds from the Recovery Act will create green jobs now and reduce energy costs for 1,100 homes in the 5th District.” The grant awards include $671,820 for the Tri-County Community Action Agency in South Boston to weatherize 86 homes; $1,194,637 for the Pittsylvania County Community Action Agency to weatherize 154 homes; and $623,232 to Telamon Corp. in South Hill to weatherize 80 homes. Weatherization assistance grants of up to $6,500 per home are available for primarily low-income families, particularly for households that have elderly persons, individuals with disabilities, and families with children. Eligibility requirements were expanded under the Recovery Act so that more homes qualify. Individual homeowners can find out if they are eligible for a weatherization grant by calling their local agency (see chart below) or by calling the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development at (804) 371-7000. Previously, Virginia has maintained a long waiting list for home weatherization grants but the Recovery Act funding will allow unprecedented investment in this program. Virginia will receive a total of $94 million for home weatherization from the stimulus bill.
