The News & Record / July 02, 2009
Halifax County’s jobless rate jumped in May to 12 percent as 2,034 persons in the local labor force of 14,919 were looking for work.

A month earlier in April, Halifax had an unemployment rate of 11.5 percent as 1,938 members of the 14,918 member labor force were unemployed.

A year earlier in May 2008, the Halifax jobless rate was exactly one-half of what it is this year — an even six percent as only 960 persons out of a much larger 16,129 member civilian labor force were without jobs.

The story was much the same in neighboring Mecklenburg County, which saw its unemployment rate rise again during the month of May, reaching 12.2 percent. 1,762 persons in the County’s 14,427 member labor force were looking for work during May. In April 2009, Charlotte County’s unemployment rate was 9.4 percent as 531 persons were job hunting. Last year in May, Charlotte’s jobless rate stood at 5.9 percent as only 330 residents were looking for work.

Lunenburg County’s jobless rate also rose in May to 10.3 percent, as 601 residents were job hunting. In April, Lunenburg’s rate was an even 10 percent as 583 persons in a labor force of 5,827 were looking for work. In May 2008, Lunenburg had a jobless rate of only 5.7 percent as 318 residents sought employment.

The City of Martinsville has the state’s highest unemployment rate in May, with 21.9 percent of the population without a job and looking for work. Martinsville has led the state for several months with its unemployment rates.

The City of Danville ranked near the top in terms of unemployment with a 14.7 percent jobless rate in May. 3,059 members of its 20,743 member work force looked for employment during the month. In May 2008, Danville’s jobless rate was only 7.8 percent.

Pittsylvania County’s unemployment rate hit 11.8 percent in May as 3,799 members of its 32,080 member labor force were job hunting.

The jobless rate in Virginia for May hit an even seven percent, up from the April rate of 6.6 percent. In May of 2008 the state rate was only 3.6 percent.
