Jobless rate ticks upward to 12.3 percent

Halifax County’s jobless rate continued to climb in June, reaching 12.3 percent, up from an even 12 percent in May. The increase meant that 2,092 persons out of the county’s 16,964 member civilian labor force were looking for work during the month, compared to 2,019 a month earlier.

Last year, in June 2008, Halifax County’s unemployment rate was 6.4 percent. Back then, 1,036 persons in a civilian labor force of 16,244 were seeking jobs.

Neighboring Mecklenburg County saw a slight decline in its jobless rate in June, dropping to 12 percent from 12.2 percent in May. Mecklenburg had 1,767 job seekers in June, compared to 800 in June 2008 when the county’s unemployment rate stood at 5.8 percent.

Lunenburg County also experienced a slight drop in its jobless rate in June as only 573 residents were looking for work compared to 591 in May. In June 2008, Lunenburg had only 350 residents — or 6.1 percent of its labor force — job hunting.

As in Halifax County, unemployment rose in June in neighboring Charlotte County, where the jobless rate jumped to 10.2 percent from 9.4 percent in May. 585 Charlotte residents were looking for work in June, compared to 326 in June 2008.

The City of Danville recorded a slight drop in unemployment, with its rate falling from 14.6 percent in May to 14.4 percent in June. 3,008 persons were looking for work in June, compared to 3,069 job seekers in May. Danville’s jobless rate in June 2008 was 8.5 percent.

Joblessness in Pittsylvania County rose slightly, from 11.6 percent in May to 11.7 percent in June.

The City of Martinsville continued to register the state’s highest unemployment, with the jobless rate there running at 21.6 percent, down slightly from May’s 22 percent. Statewide the unemployment rate stood at 7.3 percent.
