HRH offers class for clergy

HALIFAX REGIONAL OFFERS CLASSES FOR CLERGY. Vance Midgett, manager of pastoral services at Halifax Regional Hospital, is facilitating a four class series of educational programs for area Clergy, “Pastoral Presence During Times of Illness, Death and Health Crisis.” Participants may choose either day or evening sessions and there is no charge for participation. Pastoral Care Services at Halifax Regional Hospital is offering a course to local clergy beginning March 26. “Pastoral Presence During Times of Illness, Death and Health Crisis” will be led by Chaplain Vance Midgett, manager of pastoral care services and will include guest speakers at various sessions. There is no charge, but participants will need to purchase recommended books if they so choose. Classes will meet once a month for four months and both day and evening sessions are available.

The program is designed to offer Clergy the tools necessary to effectively offer compassionate ministry to those who are faced with illness, health crisis and death. The program incorporates independent reading, sixteen hours of classroom instruction/discussion, case studies and wisdom sharing. Each participant will develop a Pastoral Care Notebook for which they will be given practical literature for each session.

Participants are not required to attend all four sessions but may register for only those topics which are of interest.

The March topic is “Being a Listening Presence and Meaningful Conversation.”

The day class will meet on Friday, March 26 from 8 a.m.-noon in the Fuller-Roberts Conference Room at HRH. The evening class for this topic will meet on Monday, March 29 from 6-10 p.m. in the Leggett Auditorium. This session will help participants learn how to develop active listening skills, create sacred space, help family make the most of last moments with their loved ones, allow the patient to take the lead in the conversation, the importance of silence and the danger of fixing.

April’s topic is “Understanding the Critical and Dying Process.” The day session is scheduled for Friday, April 16 from 8 a.m.-noon in the Edmunds Conference Room with the evening session on Monday, April 19 from 6-10 p.m. in the

Fuller-Roberts Conference Room. Guest speakers Dr. Amar Parikh and ICU Nurse Manager Susan Alexander will help participants understand the various monitors used in patient care and participants will gain an understanding of the dying process and how to help patients and families experience meaningful time during a health crisis.

“Pastoral Care During Death,Burial” is the topic for May. The day class will meet on Friday, May 14 from 8 a.m.-noon in the Edmunds Conference Room with the evening class scheduled for Monday, May 17 from 6-10 p.m. in the Fuller-Roberts Conference Room. Participants will learn practical skills on family dynamics, offering pastoral counseling and facilitating sacred healing moments for family and friends of those who have died. Funeral/Memorial Services outlines will be shared. This session will include a meeting with Les Powell at Powell Funeral Home where participants will be offered practical information on funeral, memorial and graveside services.

The final class, “Being a Pastoral Presence During Grief and Bereavement” will meet on Friday, June 4 from 8 a.m.-noon in the Fuller-Roberts Conference Room or on Monday, June 7 from 6-10 p.m. in the Fuller-Roberts Conference Room.

This session will offer participants educational and practical information on the value of Pastoral Presence during grief and bereavement. Topics such as the grief process, allowing space, complicated grief and the healing journey will be discussed. Information on establishing a grief team and grief group will be shared and information and ideas for creating times of healing will be offered.

The following books will referred to during the sessions and participants may purchase them if desired, however purchase in not required: “Comforting the Fearful: Listening Skills for Caregivers” by Leroy Howe; “Pastoral Care: An Essential Guide” by John Patton; “The Wisdom of Listening” by Mark Brady and “Reaching Out: The Three Movements of the Spiritual Life” by Henri Nouwen.
