COUNCIL TO REVIEW PLANS FOR BLUEWAY AT BANISTER — Halifax Council tomorrow night will review the Town’s plans for a blueway near the new Banister River Bridge. Halifax Town Council on Tuesday night will review its plans for the Banister River Gateway Project, the entry point for a canoe/kayak trail on the Banister River. The Gateway Project will be built under the new Banister River Bridge, soon to undergo construction by the Virginia Department of Transportation. Council’s regular monthly meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. in Town Hall.

In 2007, Councilmen voted to support the inclusion of a non-motorized boat (canoe) access utilizing the Kings Road right-of-way and property adjacent to the project where the temporary bridge span and embankment will be located as a part of the Banister River Blueway and the Banister River Navigation Improvements District.

The Town’s plans for the blueway are supported by VDOT, the Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, the Dan River Basin Association, Roanoke River Rails to Trails, the Halifax County Historical Society, Old Dominion RC&D and the Southside Planning District Commission.

Councilman Jack Dunavant earlier advised Mayor Leon Plaster that he is asking VDOT to abandon the old closed King’s Bridge right-of-way through his property (he is the sole adjacent landowner) after asking that the Town declare it has no need for this old abandoned roadbed.

In other business Council will review the update of its webpage.
