Halifax pushes for bridge access deal

SoVaNow.com / March 11, 2010
Halifax Town Councilmen spent most of their meeting Tuesday working on the abandonment of the old King’s Bridge right-of-way. The Town is anxious to have an agreement with the Virginia Department of Transportation to expand recreational access to the Banister River in conjunction with the construction of the new Banister River 360 bridge project.

Several town residents were present to support the Gateway project, which calls for non-motorized boats such as canoes and kayaks to be launched near the bridge. Canoeists can then paddle their way some 14 miles up to Meadville or about 16 miles to the US 360 at the Halifax-Charlotte County line, and from there to Staunton River State Park.

By a 5-0 vote, with Councilman Jack Dunavant abstaining, Council authorized Town Manager Carl Espy to prepare a resolution to present to Halifax County and VDOT officials seeking the abandonment of the right-of-way since the Town has no need for it.

Dunavant, who is the sole property owner of land adjoining the right-of-way, has assured Council that he will give the Town of Halifax access to the lake so plans for recreational access can proceed.

In other business Tuesday night, Councilmen reviewed the Town’s new webpage which is being developed. The page will include photos of the business area, as well as some residential areas and also some history of the Town. Mayor Leon Plaster suggested that one section of the page should show a community calendar type listing of the various activities planned for the town, such as those of the Farmer’s Market and events at the Convergence Center.
