News Guill withdraws from race
SoVaNow.com / August 30, 2009
Dave Guill, the Democratic candidate for the 60th District House of Delegates seat being vacated by Del. Clark Hogan, announced on Friday that he is withdrawing from the race.In a media release Guill wrote “I have decided to withdraw from the 60th District House of Delegates race. Obligations and responsibilities to my family, job, community activities and the citizens I represent as a member of the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors are all very important to me and must come first.” Continuing Guill said, “I wish to thank the many individuals that have encouraged and supported me. I remain very committed to the citizens of (the) 60th District and I look forward to continuing to serve the communities of Southside Virginia in other respects.” Contacted by telephone on Saturday, Guill said “things simply had not come together” for him and while local voters had been very supportive, state officials had not done much to help him. He stressed that he had found the campaign very stressful to him personally. “It was just too much with the demands of my job, family and service on the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors. I will continue to work in the best interests of the residents of this community,” he said. The 60th District includes voters in Charlotte and Prince Edward Counties as well as Halifax and some portions of Nottoway County. Contacted on Saturday, Halifax County Democratic Party Chairman Evelyn Allocco said she was saddened by Guill’s announcement of his withdrawal which she had just received and had, in turn, faxed over to the State Board of Elections. Allocco said the party has until the third or fourth of September (later this week) to find a candidate although she has no prospects at this point. “We may just have to sit this one out,” Allocco said.
