Everyone is invited to attend the first annual 4th of July parade and community cookout in downtown Clarksville on Saturday, July 4, according to Lise Burnett , and chair of this year’s event. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. and immediately following the Clarksville Ruritan, Inc. will provide complimentary hot dogs, soft drinks and live music. The first 1,000 people (either participant or spectator) will receive a free American flag, she added.

Categories for those in the parade are: walking, floats, bands, bicycles and tricycles, motorcycles, antique autos, golf carts, and others. The only requirements to be a participant in the parade is to decorate yourself and/or your ride in the patriotic theme and complete a registration form and return it to the Clarksville Chamber of Commerce (105 Second Street). Registration forms will also be available the day of the event beginning at 9:45 a.m. at the Bank of America parking lot. For everyone’s safety, those driving motorized vehicles must have a valid driver’s license.

Children wanting to decorate their bicycles or other entries are encouraged to gather at the Bank of America parking lot by 9:45 a.m. Red, white and blue decorations in various forms as well as decorating enthusiasts will be on hand to assist.

Virginia Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic from Second Street to Ninth Street beginning at 10:00 a.m.; it will re-open at noon. Through traffic needing to avoid the street closure will be required to utilize the Highway 58 Bypass around Clarksville or use the detour to the south side of Virginia Avenue.
