News $500,000 set aside for sewer plantThe News & Record / July 02, 2009
On Friday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Interior and Environment Appropriations bill, which included a funding request by Congressman Tom Perriello for $500,000 for upgrading and expanding the Maple Avenue wastewater treatment plant in Halifax County. “This funding could be a major boost to economic growth in Halifax County and the creation of new jobs. With the previously announced $25,000 grant from USDA, the plans to upgrade the Maple Avenue plant and expand opportunity for new business growth could be advanced with these federal funds,” said Perriello. The bill is headed for the Senate, then will go to conference to reconcile the two versions before President Obama receives a final version to sign into law. Increasing the capacity of the wastewater plant has been a top priority of Halifax County officials. Perriello previously announced a $25,000 USDA grant for the Maple Avenue plant to fund planning studies to determine the operational efficiency, economic benefit, and environmental improvements of the planned expansion.
