Officers with the South Boston Police Department arrested 570 people on various charges during 2009, with the largest number of suspects — 87 — charged with drunkenness. The next largest category of arrests was for simple assault (84), followed by shoplifting (66). Police also arrested 44 suspects on larceny counts and 17 on burglary counts.
