A pastor who is a friend of mine came up with an interesting metaphor for the church. He said that we have allowed the church to become filled with Helen Keller Christians. Before I am inundated with people complaining that I am belittling the handicapped, let me explain. In the movie, The Miracle Worker, the Kellers send for Annie Sullivan to teach their daughter, Helen, who is blind and deaf because of a childhood illness. When Sullivan gets there, she is appalled to discover that the Kellers allow Helen to go around the dinner table, grabbing food from any plate that she so desires. When Sullivan pushes Helen away from her plate, the Kellers say, “See what you have done now! You have upset her.” That is the Helen Keller kind of Christian that we have allowed to take over the church. They are pushy people who walk around, blind and deaf, and grab food away from the plates of others without any regard for manners or social custom. Nobody has the nerve to stand up to them because, if you do, you might upset them even more and bring on a really big tantrum. We have become so used to these bullies that boorish behavior is the rule and tantrums get results quicker than logic or Christian action. In all of this, we fail to understand that we are destroying the church and we are not doing the Helen Keller Christians any favors either. Annie Sullivan taught Helen some simple manners and they became the anchor for the education that she would receive at the hands of Sullivan. In allowing our very own Helen Keller Christians to rampage through the church, we are doing little to show them what Christianity is all about. Some simple manners would go a long way toward opening the door to a new life in Christ. To be perfectly honest, I have seen more give and take in some kindergarten classes than in some churches when there are differences of opinions. Of all places in the world, we must be willing to grant that the person or persons that we are disagreeing with are persons of Christ and persons of worth. Even when they are at their most offensive, we must not give up on them. It is just as bad to allow them to be little bullies, taking their meals by tearing them away from us, as it is to steal theirs away from them. The goal is to reach our potential and to become more Christ-like. Neither ignoring sin nor committing sin is Christ-like. Therefore, let us resolve to stand up to our bullies in a loving manner and help them reach their full potential in Christ. Halifax Community
