Pull out those walking shoes and prepare to get some exercise for a good cause. Memory Walk 2009 is drawing near, and organizers and team captains are making plans. The South Boston event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Woodview. Registration begins at 9:30, with walkers taking off at 10 a.m. Memory Walk is the Alzheimer’s Association’s primary fundraising event and is held in the fall of each year in over four hundred communities all over the United Sates. Alzheimer’s disease currently affects 6 million Americans and if effective treatments and preventions are not found, it is estimated that by the middle of this century, nearly 16 million individuals, and their families, will be facing the challenges of the disease. The money raised through Memory Walk is used to support a variety of Alzheimer-related programs and services in the communities where the walks are held. In Halifax County these programs include family orientations, the 24 hour helpline, educational seminars and training workshops for both family and professional caregivers, the Safe Return program, the local support group and the speakers bureau, all of which assist individuals and families struggling with the disease. Memory Walk co-chairmen Winnie Boger and Wendy Fuller, are looking forward the upcoming event. “Each year our walk grows,” states Boger, administrator of the Woodview. “As more and more people are touched by the disease, there is more and more interest in helping to do something about it. We have a number of teams signed up to walk with us already, some who are long time supporters of the walk and others who are new. We always have room for more.” Anyone wishing to form a team or walk as an individual is welcome. “It’s always a fun morning,” Fuller says. “We have several walking routes planned so walkers can choose how energetic they want to be. We serve refreshments and give away door prizes. We are very fortunate to have great support from The Woodview, Seasons at The Woodview, Halifax Regional Health System, and the Southeastern Virginia Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association as well as the community.” If you are interested in forming a team or want to know more about the 2009 Memory Walk, call Wendy Fuller at 517-3094. |
