Kathy’s Column for March 11, 2010

SoVaNow.com / March 10, 2010
LET’S START OUT THIS WEEK’S MISSIVE WITH... some words of wisdom from William James, “The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.” So simple and doable and in this day and time so very affordable also. A few more words, this time from Zig Zigler, “It is not your aptitude, but your attitude, that determines your altitude.”

ANOTHER FIRST FOR ME, AND IN THIS CASE, ONE I HOPE NEVER EVER... to repeat. I was doing my regular cleaning chores the other day, when all of a sudden the thought came to me that I had better check on the date for one of my granddaughter’s birthdays. I had her gift purchased and packaged for over a month, and I knew I would be seeing her during her birthday month so had decided not to mail the gift but rather to just call her on her day and then celebrate with her when we were together. However, when I went to check on the date I saw that her special day had come and gone the day before with no acknowledgment from myself or her Papa. I felt so bad and so old that I finally was at the point in life where I forgot more than what I remembered. What to do, well I quickly called and left a message on her family phone and apologized, profusely telling her I would call later in the day when she came home from school. Secondly, we immediately sent off her gift rather than wait to hand it to her, but I still felt so bad. My daughter-in-law called later that same day, I thought to remind us of the birthday we had missed, but no it was nothing to do with that. Matter of fact she assured me that they were all so busy getting ready for the birthday party which was going to be held on the weekend instead of on the exact date that no one had really done or said much on THE day. Everyone had felt that since that was the day of the party they would do all the celebrating and sending of wishes to our now nine year old little girl then. I felt a little better, but realized again that if I do things way in advance, I will most likely forget all about them on the right day and time. Forgetting a grandchild’s special day, how could I?

SPEAKING OF REMEMBERING... things, I was just reminded that I had been patting myself on the back recently because of the fact that I remembered so well. Let me explain, for a couple of hours the other evening, I listened to a 50’s radio station, and sang along with almost all of the songs. I wondered where in the world those words came from as it was a very long time ago that these particular songs were popular and I hadn’t thought of them for a very long time also. It was amazing I even knew the extra little quirky kinds of things that went along with the words. For example, the oh’s and ah’s and when to sing really loud and when to be more quiet. They say that pride cometh before the fall and when I “fell” and forgot a birthday I believed it one more time to be true. Doing our best is what it is all about, and when we know the reason for our mistakes, it is usually quite easy to correct them and that’s what I’ll try to do.

IT’S GETTING WARMER, IT’S GETTING WARMER, AND IT’S GETTING CLOSER TO SPRING... YEAH, ENOUGH SAID. No more snow till next year, I hope.

I WOULD VENTURE TO SAY THAT THERE ARE TIMES THAT ALMOST EVERYONE... has a tad of envy about something or other. The perfect answer to immediately rid oneself of that horrible trait is to make a praise list of all the blessings we have in our lives. Yes, that perfect answer is a thankful heart that frees us from whatever else it is that we may think we need or want. It will instill in us a thankfulness for our very own unique and wonderful blessings and that in turn will make us happy for all those others out there who may also be needing to make such a list. Do you think that there is anyone who feels that they have every single thing ever made that they might want? I don’t and I also know I have way too many things that I really don’t want or need anymore. Spring cleaning, that old fashioned ritual, might be just the time to rid ourselves of some of our things and allow someone else the use of them for a time.

THE OLYMPICS HAVE COME AND GONE AGAIN... and we as a nation can truly be pleased with the outcome for our very own athletes. Doing our best no matter what that entails always brings with it satisfaction and a sense of well being. I can’t even imagine that kind of dedication to a sport can you? Hours and hours of practice and giving up many normal joys that most of us have time for truly does rate a medal. Whether a gold, a silver, or a bronze, or simply the fact that they competed, in my book that makes them all winners of the best prize of all — that being that they individually and as a member of a team accomplished a dream that required long hard hours and even years of work, and because of it they deserve the highest praise as their reward.

TALKING ABOUT PRIDE IN OUR COUNTRY... there is a famous deli in Annapolis, Maryland where every morning, 8:30 weekdays and at 9:30 on weekends, the owners Chick and Ruth ask their patrons to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. How interesting, and I wonder if that feeling of being from the United States of America takes on new meaning when taking the time to be grateful for where we are and the country we call home. I remember we did every morning when I was in grade school, and somehow it seemed as though history was being made each and everyday and that we were an immediate part of it.

THE PRECEDING MADE ME WANT TO BECOME FAMILIAR... once again with the words of our Preamble in order to realize anew our democracy at work. At one time I knew it by heart but no longer. “We the people of the United States, in order to from a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquillity, prove to the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish the is Constitution for the United States of America.” The foundation on which we stand is divided into three groups, the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch and the Judicial Branch. Is it perfect? No, but I have yet to hear of a better idea on this earth. These form our system of checks and balances, and even though we may be disillusioned at times, we must also be aware that things could be so much worse and better yet, let’s ask ourselves what can we do personally to improve what we have. And thus ends today’s lesson in history which continues to be made day after day and minute by minute.

DO ANY OF MY READERS ENJOY PUTTING PUZZLES TOGETHER... Personally I love doing a puzzle but until very recently hadn’t done one in a very long time. It didn’t take me long to realize why I had quit that fun hobby, however, as the following is what happens to me when I have a pile of pieces waiting to be put together. I completely lose track of time as hours go by, my back and crouched shoulders ache, I forget to do simple things like taking an early morning shower in order to get going on the day, and oh was I supposed to make a meal at a certain time? Even why do I have to go to bed at all during one twenty-four hour period/ My dearest sister sent me this lovely puzzle the other day, so of course, I didn’t want her to think I wasn’t appreciative. Quickly I dumped out the contents of the box, separated the edges from the middle and began my lengthy journey. It was amazing how rapidly all my old puzzle habits came back, and anyone who loves the art of puzzle making knows them also. It is a given to never pass by a table where one is putting a puzzle together without at least putting in a piece or two, or maybe even fifty or more at a time. You must block out work that needs to be done, forget that meals need to be eaten at certain times, and that any and everything pertaining to a regular schedule needs to be quickly transferred to the proverbial back burner. The piece de resistance, is getting a fellow family member to join in the fun, and thus make them understand why it is you are a bit behind in your everyday chores. My problem there was that after finding TWO whole pieces my husband had had enough of doing things the right way and began to bend and stuff pieces into places where they didn’t belong, pretending all the while that they fit. I finished it, now my best friend wants me to share it, and I can’t wait to hear how she does and what she eliminates from her list of daily do’s.

GOD BLESS...AND PASS IT ON...AND ON...
