Kathy’s Column for July 2, 2009

SoVaNow.com / July 01, 2009
LET’S START OUT WITH THE FOLLOWING BEAUTIFUL WORDS FOR EACH... of us to ponder. “Only the heart knows how to find what is precious.”- Fyodor Dostoyevsky. How true, and I’m sure we all know exactly what it means, friends and family, are the first two that come to mind for me, what about you?

POLITICS... that thing we were always taught not to bring up especially when meeting someone new for the first time. Recently a movie came out entitled, “Frost/Nixon” and actor Frank Langella had this comment on his role in the movie about Nixon’s presidency. “I liked the fact that Nixon was not an everyday guy, as I like that about all the politicians of that period. They were irascible, difficult, funny-looking, bizarre guys, and they revealed a lot more of their idiosyncrasies than today’s do.” True or not, I never thought of past presidents in that way, but maybe from now on I will.

RETIREMENT, EVERYONE OR AT LEAST MOST EVERYONE... looks forward to it, and I wonder if most retirees think about what they will be spending their time on during the leisure days ahead. One gentleman we know Don Jones, knows exactly what he will be doing and it will be watching all of his favorite Pittsburgh, (not Pittsburg) teams win the coveted best record of their respective seasons. He even went so far as to predict that maybe the Steelers, and Pirates, will win this time around and that adding that to the Penguins recent championship (it’s a bird thing) will gain Pennsylvania the honor of having a triple crown, just like in horse racing. We wish the best on your retirement and a lot of wins for your three teams.

I’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THE WORD FELLOWSHIP AND WHAT IT MEANS... in my life and I’ve come to the following conclusions. According to its history, real fellowship expresses participation or a sharing relationship between people of like faith. In today’s world the connotation seems to have more to do with sharing a cup of coffee and some food after a church service. However, fellowship should include being involved in each other’s lives by sharing one another’s problems and burdens. Of course, sharing the good things is also a necessity, in other words becoming so attuned with these friends that we become affected by whatever affects them. Sharing the same lifestyles and time with one another brings that closeness or fellowship that I think the original meaning conveys (some ideas came from an article that helped me to understand the true meaning).

WE’VE RECENTLY CELEBRATED THAT OTHER... auspicious parent holiday that goes hand in hand with Mother’s Day. This time it was Father’s Day, and I hope for all of our readers that there were huge amounts of happy and meaningful memories of either your biological father or the person who filled that role in your life. The one thing we can agree on is the fact that were it not for him we wouldn’t be here, so that in itself is a blessing to us all. My Daddy has been gone from this earth many years, but I can still conjure up some great memories. I remember the chores he gave me at his business, and especially the pay which was the right to have a soda, something salty, an ice cream product and maybe even some candy from his inventory. Now, what child wouldn’t love that currency? I know I did. I have another memory which brings tears to my eyes, it was when The Citadel Military Academy in Charleston, S.C. had a moment of silence in honor of my Dad during the time my son was a student and officer there. The military truly knows how to honor someone in a profound way, don’t they? “ Thankfulness is the soil in which joy thrives!”-copied

I’M JUMPING FROM SUBJECT TO SUBJECT AS IS READILY APPARENT... so please bear with me as I tackle something else. This time it has to do with telling a lie. Here’s a thought, “A lie will travel around the world, while truth is still putting on its boots!”-Spurgeon.

I’M QUITE SURE THAT EACH OF US HAS LIED AT ONE TIME OR OTHER... then comes the question — was it a white lie or a black lie? Sometimes we think a white lie is definitely called for in some situations, but I wonder. In the long run wouldn’t the entire truth have been much better? White lies have been termed black ones with a superficial coat of whitewash. Here is an example I found of this way of thinking. A certain sausage manufacturer advertised “rabbit sausage.” Here comes the problem, when it came time for the food inspectors to do their job they found it was only one per-cent rabbit and ninety-nine percent horse meat. The inspector said and I quote, “how can you call this rabbit sausage?” Here is the answer he was given, “because it is half rabbit meat, it was made with one rabbit and one horse.” This was said to be true, but true story or not it sure puts telling a white lie into perspective, and should make us think each time we are tempted to tell a half truth. Things are either fact or false, with truth being a positive term so we must be encouraged to always tell the truth.

EARLY IN THE MORNING WHILE LOOKING OUT MY KITCHEN WINDOW... the other day, I once again saw something I had never seen before. A bird, and a rather small one I might add, dive bombed a visiting cat in our backyard. I don’t know who was more surprised the cat or me. Now mind you, this was a pretty good sized cat who was just out visiting the neighborhood and completely minding his or her own business. He or she was walking along the sidewalk when this bird swooped down and looked like it hit the cat on its head. The cat jumped in fright and seemed to be in a daze for a little while after. Now, I could understand if there was a nest nearby or something, but there wasn’t so it looked to me as though the bird was just doing some bullying for no apparent reason. Shame on it, unless the cat was just too close to a family of birds that I am not aware of. Nature it is so unique and so interesting and so amazing, especially when we humans can share in one of its quirky happenings like I did.

FRIENDSHIPS ARE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT... of all things we can have as human beings. Here is a saying that sums up what we have when we have been in a relationship for a good length of time with someone. “Friendships are like antiques, the older they get the more valuable they become.”-copied. I have some truly valuable friendships that are priceless and I cherish them, believe me. If, however, most of our friends have just become friends in recent times, they too have the potential of becoming valuable antiques. In this modern computer and cell phone day and age there is no excuse for not keeping in touch as distance is no longer a factor. Of course, in order to build a relationship — just like building a business or a reputation — one needs to do something and not just have good intentions. Intentions may be honorable and sincere but unless they are put into action nothing will be accomplished in building relationships. Some good advice for getting it done would be to “promise only what you can deliver, and then deliver more than you promise” (anonymous). Also do it with charity which is love. “Charity is when your heart strings are stronger than your purse strings.” Anonymous. Some good recipes for building treasured and long time friends.

I’M SURE YOU HAVE ALL HEARD ABOUT THE EXCUSE NOTE A WISCONSIN 10 YEAR OLD NAMED KENNEDY GOT... from the President of the United States recently, but just in case you haven’t, it is one of those great stories she will be able to share for the rest of her life. It was her last day of school and instead of attending for the requisite half day she chose to go along to a town hall meeting with her dad. The President was coming to Green Bay that morning to speak at this meeting and her dad was one of the people chosen to ask a question when they got there. Her dad began by saying my daughter came with me instead of going to school. “Does she need a teacher’s note for not being in school” he asked the President. “No, because I will write her an excuse,” and so he did. The note said, “To Kennedy’s teacher, Please excuse Kennedy, she is with me. Barack Obama.” I would imagine that note will go down in history. Most likely that little girl will become a truly good citizen who will always do her educated best when it comes to voting and politics as she saw the importance of government from a front row seat and she can prove it. She said she was going to make copies of the note and frame the original, and that her teacher couldn’t have the original.

GOD BLESS...AND PASS IT ON...AND ON...
