Kathy’s Column for Dec. 3, 2009

SoVaNow.com / December 02, 2009
HERE WE ARE, IT’S THE BEGINNING OF DECEMBER... and we finally got a good number of tomatoes off our vines at one time. Okay, they are quite small, hard as rocks and did I mention that they are a lovely shade of spring green? No problem, however, as we are just so excited to reap a harvest of any sort. We decided to try eating them raw now as during the summer whenever we got one or two we had fried green tomatoes. Did you know they are very tasty as a raw vegetable? I use them as a garnish and they are a win, win situation and a pretty addition to our meals.

ONE LAST OLD FASHIONED CURE FOUND IN THAT OLD RECEIPT BOOK... I’ve been sharing with you. This one is entitled, “How to make the hair grow.” Take rosemary maiden hair, Southernwood, hasel bark, of each two ounces, Burn those to ashes on a clean hearth, put those ashes in white wine to make a strong lie and wash the hair daily at the root, keep it cut short. This is better than bears oil or pomatum.-copied. Please remember, I’m not advocating using this but rather sharing something from the past that most likely didn’t work or we would have numerous variations of it today in our stores. I have never checked the ingredients of Rogaine... who knows?

I HOPE EVERYONE ONE HAD A WONDERFUL DAY OF... giving thanks and realizing just how much each of us has to be thankful for. Now perhaps we can try being thankful each and every day instead of just that one day in November.

THE ARTICLE WAS ENTITLED, “LET GO OF THE GUILT”... and it was directed to care givers. It said two great things that may help anyone out there who feels that they are in such a place. Number one, it said most all people doing the care giving always feel sandwiched because they want to or feel the need to meet everyone’s needs (and, usually forgetting their own in the process). Second, we are told to acknowledge the impossibility of such a task, it just can’t be done... Hopefully, knowing it is impossible will get folks to realize that doing what they can is more than enough and will help to guard against such guilt.

HERE IS A GREAT QUOTE ABOUT BASEBALL... regarding a Red Sox win of the World Series. Years had gone by without such a win so the author said prior to a win, “when the Sox win it is like a comet that only recurs once every 86 years. Now in recent times because of a second win it is beginning to feel more like a birthright and fans are expecting it to happen.” I had to put this in my column as I happen to know two of the most faithful Red Sox fans in the world, and I loved this analogy and think they also might. I know baseball season is over but this was too good to pass up and I know I would most likely lose this bit of information by next season (some of the above info was gleaned from a copy of the Boston Globe).

I SURE HOPE EVERYONE IS ENJOYING HOLIDAY MUSIC... by now. I love it and truly enjoy most every song of the season. Of course we all still have our favorites but the majority of Christmas music can take one back to a memory that has been forgotten for the better part of a year. Music, like love, does make the world go round, and it can light up not only our eyes but our deepest souls and make us all feel like children waiting with much expectation for what is coming around the corner next during this happiest and holiest time of year. “Silent Night, Holy Night” will always be number one for me, what about you? (Both the German and English version)

WHY IS LAUGHTER HEALTHY?... Do we realize that it is contagious, it kills depression, it reduces stress, attracts others and it makes difficult situations tolerable? I found this bit of information in a book of self-help. And this is only the beginning, I’m sure we all have instances of laughter being a big help in our lives at different times. Here are some of the results when we start laughing, others will join in, one can’t be depressed and laugh at the same time, it is a distraction from one’s worries, people will be drawn to you as that is what a warm smile and hearty laugh do, and lastly a laugh can help to lighten even the heaviest of loads. LAUGH A LOT, IT’S GOOD FOR YOU.

WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER ONE FEAR... I was surprised to find that all recent statistics continue to say it is the fear of public speaking. I’m not saying that I’m not scared to speak in public, but I do know that fear of heights, fear of falling, fear of deep water, fear of flying, and other fears also rate right up there, at least for me. I read a quote of Walter Cronkite’s when talking about speaking in public and it was rather unique I thought. He said, “It’s natural to have butterflies when speaking in public, but I’ve found that the secret is to get them to fly in formation.” I would imagine that comes from practice, doing one’s homework about the subject, and knowing a lot about what you are going to say on any given subject, and again practice, practice and more practice.

A PROCRASTINATOR’S FAVORITE WORD IS “SOMETIME”... or at least for me it is, and I am truly going to work at getting that long word off my personal description. I know the best way is to do whatever one is procrastinating about right now. But, sometimes it isn’t possible and whatever it is that needs to be done has to wait for a time in the future. What we need to do, though, is to designate when that future is, for instance at such and such a time today, or maybe on another specific day or month or even in a year I must do such and such. Yes, long range plans that may not occur for a number of years also need to have a definite designation. For example, I’ll do it when the children leave home or when one retires, or when one feels it’s the right time to start a new career. With our goals written down and within a specific time line I think it is possible to finally get a handle on our problems in our day to day lives. The scripture verse saying, “to everything there is a season and a time to every purpose,” is surely appropriate here also, and will pretty much guarantee success. We just need to find that balance and harmony (some of the above from a morning devotional).

FOLLOWING IS SOME GREAT NEWS TO SHARE WITH ALL OF HALIFAX COUNTY... from now through Dec. 17, you will be able to enjoy a truly lovely outing. Our very own wonderful artist, Karen Shelton is having a one person show entitled “La Vie” at the Caswell Center. She will have over 60 pieces on display which will encompass many of her various types of paintings from abstract, still lifes, and some older pieces of her work. Various sizes are also being showcased with some being rather large. The times to visit are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. There will also be an opportunity to view this impressive showing of this large body of work during numerous shows taking place at Caswell on the weekends during this time...Call 336-694-4501 to find out all the details. Enjoy her show and continue to be proud of her work and the fact she is from our very own town.

I HAVE TO SHARE THE FOLLOWING... after my previous bit about procrastinating. I stopped writing this column for awhile today because I saw something that I have been putting off forever, or so it seems. Now I’m back after having done it, and I truly feel like a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders, because this will no longer be something that bothers me on a regular basis. I truly think and hope that this new attitude will work extremely well. My next job that I’ve been putting off today is finishing this column so no more excuses or I will miss the deadline.

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR US TO BE KNOWN AS HAVING A GOOD AND KIND CHARACTER... you know the one that the rest of the world sees? What connotes our character? “Your character is essentially the sum of your habits.”-copied. Does that fit and is it time to change one’s habits, just a thought. Maybe it’s the fact that, “We become whatever we are committed to.” Again, do we need to change our priorities? Food for thought for each of us I would imagine.

GOD BLESS...AND PASS IT ON...AND ON...
