Kathy’s Column for Aug. 6, 2009

SoVaNow.com / August 05, 2009
THE OTHER MORNING... I was privy to a marvelously beautiful sunrise. Then a bit later on that same day I came across this poem in an old magazine, and I couldn’t help but be reminded of my early morning gift of the perfect sunrise. The poem by anonymous is entitled, “Look at the sunrise!” “Streaks of gold and yellow wash the night away. Ribbons of rose and lilac herald the coming day. Colors soften to peach as the sun continues to rise. And slowly a clean, clear blue rinses the morning skies. Such a spectacular sunrise makes me want to sing. Praising the work of His hands, The Creator of all things.” Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

JULY WAS NATIONAL ICE CREAM MONTH, AND I TRULY HOPE YOU ALL ATE YOUR FAIR SHARE OF ONE OF MY FAVORITE TREATS... I know I did my part to keep ice cream shops in business. Matter of fact I did too good of a job, but that is okay as long as I hurry and jump back on the healthy eating wagon I need to be on. Actually there are so many great ice cream treats out there that are strictly healthy one doesn’t need to cheat on their daily caloric numbers. Some interesting facts to go along with this little piece of info is that it takes 16 pounds of milk — about 2 gallons — to make one half-gallon of ice cream. The average dairy cow produces about 100 glasses of milk in one day or more than 2,000 gallons per year. One more fact that I didn’t know is that most milk produced in the United States has to travel only about 100 miles from farm to store, thus ensuring freshness and quality, but my Farm Bureau magazine says that the above is all true.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN, CAN WE EVER GET ENOUGH OF HIS WONDERFUL COMMENTS. I FOR ONE THINK NOT... Harold Holzer is an author of 33 books about the Great Emancipator, so if you want to find out more about this great President check his books out. Here in some of Lincoln’s own words are comments he is credited with. “No man resolved to make the most of himself can spare the time for personal contention.” “I am rather inclined to silence, and whether that be wise or not, it is at least more unusual nowadays to find a man who can hold his tongue than to find one who cannot.” “Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.” One last one, “I want it said of me by those who knew me best, that I always plucked a thistle and planted a flower where I thought a flower would grow.” And so he did, is the way the article ended and thanks to my Costco Connection magazine for these words.

I WANT TO SAY ANOTHER IMPORTANT THANK YOU TO EVERYONE THAT HAD ANY PART IN THE DUCKS ON THE DAN... celebration awhile back. My husband bought his tickets and was rewarded by winning a monetary gift to Fuller’s Menswear. Not only was the whole celebration worthwhile, but he now has a wonderful new shirt and a pair of socks to wear. I’m sure most everyone has already cashed in their various prizes, but I felt it necessary to thank all those who gave gifts as that is a great way to thank customers and to advertise their wares. I know that we will look forward to next year’s event and to see if maybe we are fortunate enough to again win a prize.

SOMETHING WE ALL NEED IS A FAMILY, AND IT GOES BY MANY NAMES BUT THE END RESULT AND WHAT IT MEANS TO EACH OF US IS THE SAME...”Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you NEED one.”- Jane Howard. I encourage each of us to make a special effort to do something good and kind for those we call our family. Maybe, if each of us does that we will find ourselves more optimistic and more ready to face whatever life hands us on a daily basis... After all, who knows us better and who cares more about us than the unit we call our very own unique family.

AS MOST OF MY READERS KNOW I LOVE TO TRAVEL... so when I came upon the following I was most interested as to the outcome. The National Aviary in Pittsburgh (one of the places I used to live, in Pittsburgh not at the Aviary) contacted USAirways about flying one of their special critters to Los Angeles. It seems that a penguin, named Patrick was going to be in a movie out there and he needed to be transported in his kennel from one place to the other. The airlines did all the checking to comply to their rules and agreed that this was a most doable request. This was an African Penguin, on the endangered species list and was only six inches high. Patrick’s handlers purchased a First Class seat for him and he was on his safe and merry way. I must admit I’ve never had a seat mate as interesting as that, but I am planning a trip to California very soon, so who knows. The airline said he was one cool character and that his trip was uneventful.

“HAPPINESS IS AS A BUTTERFLY WHICH WHEN PURSUED IS ALWAYS BEYOND OUR GRASP... but which if you will sit down quietly may alight upon you.”-Nathaniel Hawthorne. I just stood quietly and it lit on my arm and what a sense of awe it brought.

SUMMER CONTINUES TO RACE ON BY... and I just realized that as yet I haven’t had one of my favorite fruits, which is a homegrown melon. I like or I should say love all kinds of melons, and so I must run right out and purchase some. As I said before our very own garden isn’t doing well so you can be sure I won’t be getting them there. The only things really looking healthy are the marigolds surrounding the circumference of said garden and protecting it from our backyard critters, at least that’s what we were told. I guess it’s time to try eating some of them. I know I’ve eaten various flowers in the past, but marigolds aren’t among those, and I must first check with one of my many Master Gardener friends to see if they are even edible. I know one thing I’m not crazy about is their smell and I wonder if that is how they will taste?

THE NEWS CONTINUES TO BE RATHER DEPRESSING MOST OF THE TIME... so it was with great delight that I read the following words attributed to the late Paul Harvey. “In times like these, it is GOOD to REMEMBER that there have always been times like these.” Yes it is true, when hearing of something that is happening now, one usually is reminded of a similar happening in the past. It helps to give us a more comforting perspective on the news of today.

A FRIEND RECENTLY LOST A LOVED ONE... and as usual I tried to think of some words that would not only be appropriate but would also have a deep meaning. Then, I came across the following words by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, which gave not only hope but peace and the knowledge that others too don’t always know what is the proper thing to do or say. “...some tears fell down my cheeks and then I smiled, as those smile who no longer have that precious face in the world to smile back to them. I had lost a friend.” What exactly makes a good friend, according to an old Scottish saying it is two things and they are give and take.

BY THE TIME THIS COLUMN HITS THE NEWSTANDS I SHOULD HAVE RETURNED FROM ANOTHER... trip to my home state of Wisconsin. We had been promised all kinds of warm weather, lots of family outings, best friend get togethers and a 50th class reunion which seems unbelievable, after all didn’t we just get out of school? I hope all of these predictions came true, and I will let you know more about the trip in future columns.

I’VE FORGOTTEN TO TELL YOU ALL... that IT SEEMS as though I am finally getting the hang of putting my contact lenses in and or out. The out part is the easiest at the present and the in part continues to surprise me. Some days they are good to go with only one attempt and then it’s the other days when I try and try and try again. However we all know that perseverance is the name of the game and it doesn’t matter the number of tries but rather the final outcome that is important.

GOD BLESS...AND PASS IT ON...AND ON...
