The Fawning Ladies of Robin Hood

Robin Hood is the quintessential hero; he’s brave, he’s generous, and everyone loves him. While there are many tales surrounding his legend, most contain the similar theme of Robin’s saving England from evil tyrants. The Halifax County High School Drama Department presents to us a more updated version of Robin’s adventure to save the good people of England: The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood.And speaking of good people of England, this show has an entertaining and lovable cast of characters. There’s Robin, the egotistical outlaw, and his Merry Men, who are loyal to him through thick and thin. Lady Marian, Robin Hood’s sweetheart, is elegant but strong-willed, as is her Lady-in-Waiting. Prince John and the Sheriff of Nottingham are, like any quality villains, cruel and selfish. Surrounding Prince John are the Fawning Ladies, giggling young maidens who simply idolize the prince and the sheriff. They may be ditzy, but they bring lots of laughs to the performance. The story is set in medieval England. The ruler of the country, King Richard, is off fighting in the Crusades. Richard’s brother, the evil Prince John, sees Richard’s absence as a golden opportunity to take over and claim the crown. He and the Sheriff of Nottingham reign over their subjects with iron fists. Robin Hood, disturbed by this injustice, sets out to overthrow the tyrants, restore freedom to the people in a not-so-traditional way, and maybe even learn a life lesson or two. This is all seen through the eyes of a young townsgirl, who is a member of Robin’s Merry Men. The Fawning Ladies of the evil Prince John are played by six freshmen and sophomores at HCHS: freshmen Ladies are Elisabeth Brogden, Haven Simon, and Amber Walton. Sophomore Ladies are Sharonda Claiborne, Lisa Knouse, and Kaitlyn Puryear. Of these six, only Elisabeth has previous experience locally, having been in several Halifax County Little Theatre shows, as well as the recent one act play, “John Lennon and Me.” Many members of the Robin Hood cast have taken part in previous productions. Some have taken the Theatre Arts classes that are taught at the high school. The actors say they are excited about opening night and have had a great time putting the show together. Becky Donner, the director, never fails to impress her audiences and has prepared another astounding play. The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood was written by Mary Dobson. It will be performed in the Halifax County High School auditorium at 8 p.m. on three dates: Thursday, March 18, Friday, March 19, and Saturday, March 20. Tickets will be on sale at the door for $5. The play is family-friendly and fun for everyone. |
