Robin Hood: The Good and the Bad

Polishing lines and perfecting moves on stage are several characters in Halifax County High School's production of The SOMEWHAT True Tale of Robin Hood. Set to open Thursday, March 18, for three performances, the show is a comedic romp through the classic Robin Hood story. Four of these medieval characters represent both the good and the bad of life in Sherwood Forest.One of these good characters is played by senior Shane Brogden, who portrays Friar Tuck, the fatherly spiritual guide for Robin Hood and his Merry Men. A veteran of the stage, both at HCHS and for Little Theatre, Shane said, "I have been working in theater since the ninth grade, and I certainly wanted to be a part of Robin Hood. I even gave up a yearbook trip to New York City which conflicted with the shows dates." In his free time, Brogden is an amateur photographer and the editor of the school's yearbook. Brogden recently was in the school's Western Valley District winning competition play, John Lennon and Me. He has appeared in Disney's High School Musical, was a part of the Comet Comedy Club, and was in Little Theatre's, It's a Wonderful Life. In addition, he has worked backstage in numerous roles, helping to produce the shows. Brogden hopes to attend Averett University and major in computer information systems, as well as be a part of their theatre program. Another good character is played by Caitlin Helinski, who portrays the Lady-in-Waiting to Maid Marian. A freshman this year, Caitlin was also featured in John Lennon and Me as well as Little Theaters Winnie the Pooh. Helinski enjoys drawing and playing soccer in addition to her love of acting and the theatre. She describes her character as the nagging mother type who is fed up with life in the castle. The Lady-in-Waiting aids Maid Marian as she tries to avoid marriage to the Sheriff of Nottingham. Helinski has a nice feel for comedic roles and brings a lot to her performance throughout the show. Every time there is a good character, however, there is an evil force who is working at odds with him. In Robin Hood, there are two evil characters battling Robin Hoods quest to aid the poor and needy: the Sheriff of Nottingham and the Evil Prince John. These two roles are played by Brian Brooks and Mark Aaron. Brooks describes his character as the pompous lackey to Prince John. He is a truly nasty piece of work! The Sheriff of Nottingham wishes to have Maid Marian for himself, and he battles Robin Hood with the assistance of Prince John to order to win her hand. A sophomore, Brooks participated in last year's Comet Comedy Club, and his enjoyment of that led him to audition for Robin Hood. He said, "I have a lot of fun with my fellow cast members; I learn so much from them and they always make me laugh!" In his free time, Brooks enjoys reading, writing, and sports. He hopes to graduate high school in the top five of his class and attend college to study design. Finally, the other truly bad character is the Evil Prince John, played by sophomore Aaron. Prince John is the evil egotistical head bad guy who wants to overthrow his brother in order to become King of England, says Aaron. An acting buff, Aaron would like to become a film or television actor professionally. He finds putting a show together and all of the work that goes into it fascinating and fun. In his spare time, he enjoys working with computers, swimming, and acting. Aaron was also in the competition one act John Lennon and Me recently. The cast and crew of Robin Hood have enjoyed the rehearsal process so far and are eager for opening night to arrive. The show will run for three evenings, Thursday through Saturday, March 18, 19, and 20, at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium. All tickets are $5 and will be sold at the door. The show is family friendly, so make plans to attend and enjoy this romp through merry old England. Relish the battle between good and evil, especially between Robin Hood and the Evil Prince John and the Sheriff of Nottingham. Will good prevail? Come see for yourself. |
