It’s hard to be good, noble, and a role model. Everyone is always watching, waiting for the fall. Your enemies are always hoping they can trip you up and bring you down. Such is the life of Robin Hood, defender of the poor and the underfed. In Halifax County High School’s production of “The SOMEWHAT True Tale of Robin Hood,” the hero must battle his enemies to save the town and win the hand of the woman he loves.

Opening Thursday at 8 p.m. in the Halifax County High School auditorium, this version of Robin Hood presents our hero in glorious fashion. Yet there are a few twists to the tale. This show features an unusual narrator to the story – someone who can control time and space and make the impossible work. There is also an egocentric Robin Hood, who admits he’s the most important person in the show. And finally, there is the love interest of Robin Hood, Maid Marion, who appears obsessed with skin conditions. All three of these quirks combine to create a most amusing show for children and adults alike.

Playing the narrator of the tale is senior DaNiesha Carr. This narrator, called the Town’s Girl, introduces the scenes and take the audience from location to location, explaining which characters are good and which ones are bad. She enters into scenes when things seem their worst and helps the characters out of sticky situations, saying, “Excuse me, but may I be of some assistance?” She then calls on the aid of her friend, Madam Technical Director in the lighting booth, to transport the characters out of their troubles and into the arms of safety. She also offers her knowledge of certain things to teach the characters how to help themselves.

Carr is no newcomer to the stage, having appeared in HCHS shows since her ninth grade year when she was in “Disney’s High School Musical.” She has also been in “Pride and Prejudice,” the Comet Comedy Club, and the past three one act competition plays, winning acting honors in two district events and the recent regional competition of “John Lennon and Me.”

In addition, this past week Carr came in First Runner Up in the statewide Poetry Out Loud contest in Richmond, competing against high school students from public and private schools across the state. This accomplished young actress hopes to attend VCU as a communications major and would like to pursue a broadcasting or acting career.

Robin Hood, the hero of the show, is played by sophomore Matthew Ballou. Ballou also knows his way around the stage, having taken roles in Little Theatre’s “The Tempest” and “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.” In addition, he also has been in the last two competition one act plays as well as the Comet Comedy Club last year.

Ballou describes Robin Hood as a man with a bit of an ego problem but a man with a good heart nevertheless. He truly wants to help the poor (by robbing the rich) and aid them in their suffering. His faithful followers, his band of Merry Men, assist Robin Hood as he dashes throughout Sherwood Forest. Ballou said, “As soon as I read the script for the play, I knew I had to audition for the role of Robin Hood. He’s such an interesting twist to the usual portrayal of this classic character.”

Robin Hood’s love interest, Maid Marion, is brought to life by senior Brandi Winstead. She describes her character as, “a very nice and down-to-earth damsel in distress.” But this Maid Marion also has plenty of curses for her enemies, wishing them all sorts of gross skin conditions, split ends, or warts if they continue to plague her and make her marry the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Winstead has enjoyed meeting new people in the cast and getting to know all the different personalities. She plays on the girls’ tennis team and wants to go into the medical profession after college, possibly opening up her own practice. Winstead also performed in the Comet Comedy Club last year and was in “John Lennon and Me” recently in one act competition.

Winstead, Carr, and Ballou are ready to “Get the show on the road!” as Winstead said.

“The SOMEWHAT True Tale of Robin Hood” opens this Thursday at 8 P.M. in the high school auditorium and continues Friday and Saturday nights at the same time. The show is very appropriate for young children, and adults can enjoy the play on a different level, as all the characters learn lessons about life and about how to treat others.

Tickets will be sold at the door for $5, and Halifax County Little Theatre will be selling concessions at intermission to support their scholarship fund that is awarded to graduating seniors annually. Make plans to see Robin Hood as he realizes, “I am the conqueror of evil and exemplar of good! I am the ultimate hero!” Yes, this Robin Hood has a little to learn also! Hope to see you there!
