Prizery founds professional summer stock theatre

The Prizery arts center has established a resident Professional Summer Theatre Company that will stage three vibrant musicals in June and July starring professional actors, singers, dancers and support staff from around the region.

“Dames at Sea,” “The All Night Strut” and “Annie” will run live in The Prizery’s Chastain Theatre for multiple performances.

The Prizery will hold an open audition Saturday, March 13, 1-5 p.m. for actors, singers and dancers. Auditionees must prepare a one-minute monologue and one upbeat, Broadway-style show tune. Contracts are for eight weeks, June 4 through August 7. The Prizery this past weekend auditioned actors, singers and dancers at the Southeastern Theatre Conference in Lexington, Ky. – an annual convention where professional thespians compete for summer stock spots at theatres around the nation. The jobs require daytime and nighttime commitment. (Local performers who would like to be a part of the summer company’s production of “Annie” should audition on Saturday, April 10, 1-4. p.m. at The Prizery.)

The beloved “Annie,” in particular, will have ample on-stage opportunities for amateur performers, and all three productions will be looking for unpaid apprentices wanting to work with and learn from the visiting professionals.

Prizery Executive Director Chris Jones, who will direct all three musicals and has a background in regional theatre, said the idea is to nurture the arts among young people, develop another facet of The Prizery’s mission and help Halifax County become a destination for lovers of the performing arts. The productions, some with up to 14 performances (including matinees), are set to attract travelers and tour buses into the area, where visitors will want to dine, shop and in some cases sleep.

The professional actors, too, will live and play here during their eight-week stint.

“Auditions are going well, and we look to bring some exciting talent to the stage this summer,” said Jones.

“Dames at Sea,” a rollicking, madcap musical-within-a-musical, premieres June 24 for 10 performances.

“The All Night Strut,” a musical revue of the jazzy, bluesy 1930s and 40s, opens July 8 for eight performances.

“Annie,” one of Broadway’s favorite musicals, is based on the Little Orphan Annie comic strip; it opens July 22 for 14 performances.

In total, the theatre company will hire 16 people for the short summer run: 10 performers (actors, singers, dancers) and six production workers (costumer/props, pianist, carpenter, etc).

The summer stock company is intended to build on and augment the lively theatre community already established by the Halifax County Little Theatre – the venerable all-volunteer organization more than 50 years old – and its popular season (which runs autumn to spring). Halifax County Little Theatre is an official Prizery User Group, one of a half-dozen arts- and civic-minded organizations partnering with The Prizery.

The Prizery receives support from the Virginia Commission for the Arts.
