Grammy-nominated jazz violinist Regina Carter at Prizery on Friday
SoVaNow.com / March 05, 2010
One of the most dynamic and technically accomplished violinists now recording will appear Friday night at The Prizery arts center.Regina Carter, who plays jazz and classical violin, is a winner of a MacArthur “Genius” Grant. Carter has shared the stage with Billy Joel and Dolly Parton and has recorded with Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige and Lauryn Hill. Oprah Winfrey’s magazine, O, and others have raved about her music. Says Time magazine: “Regina Carter creates music that is wonderfully listenable, probingly intelligent and, at times, breathtakingly daring … taking the listener into the future of jazz.” The Detroit-born Carter began violin as a preschooler, studying the Suzuki Method until she was nine. In high school, Carter performed with the Detroit Civic Orchestra, played in a pop-funk group and studied jazz with Marcus Belgrave. Carter received a degree in music from Oakland University and studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston before launching her career in 1987. Now with five acclaimed albums to her credit, Carter is set to release “Reverse Thread” in May. “Reverse Thread” is a collection of infectious African folk melodies in a beautiful, contemporary interpretation. Her website describes it as “a celebration of the old and new – and that of a musician internationally acclaimed as among the most transcendent voices of contemporary violin.” In 2001, she became the first jazz musician in history to play the Guarneri del Gesu violin, owned by composer and classical musical virtuoso Nicolo Paganini. She was also permitted to use the violin to record her 2003 album “Paganini: After the Dream.” Her album “Freefall” was nominated for a Grammy in 2002. Her appearance is supported by the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, Altria, Joel Cunningham Attorney at Law, John Fulton’s Charles Bass House and the Virginia Commission for the Arts. A free reception follows. Tickets are $29 for adults, $27 for college students and senior citizens and $15 for youth. For tickets, call The Prizery at (434) 572-8339 or see http://www.prizery.com.
