Daneisha Carr of Halifax County High School won the Poetry Out Loud regional competition held Thursday at The Prizery. She and two others, Janessa Reid of Tunstall High School, who won second place, and Julia Simon of Halifax High, who took third place, and will advance to the state finals in March in Richmond. The Virginia winner will then proceed to the final, national competition in April in Washington, D.C.

Winners representing the two schools faced off Thursday at The Prizery for the first local regional event in this relatively new program, which started nationally in 2006. Poetry Out Loud which encourages the nation’s teenagers to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance. This exciting program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.

State champs receive $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington to compete for the national championship. The state winner’s school receives a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books. A total of $50,000 in awards and school stipends at the National Finals will be awarded to the winners, with a $20,000 award for the Poetry Out Loud National Champion.

The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the Barksdale Theatre and Theatre IV to sponsor the Virginia competitions. For more information, see http://poetryoutloud.org/.
