Halifax Town Council members on Tuesday night learned more about what a
"scenic river designation" could do for the Bansiter River. According
to information from the Department of Conservation and Recreation, such
a designation constitutes official recognition of the natural, scenic,
historic and recreational values of some of the state's most valuable
river resources, providing them with a measure of protection not
afforded other rivers.
It also gives riparian landowners and other local citizens a stronger
voice in any government action or decisions that have the potential to
impact "their" river. The program which was initiated some 30 years ago
promotes a greater awareness of the value of rivers to the citizens. It
also addresses some threats associated with development, poor farming
practices and urbanizing landscapes.
Councilmen hope to talk with County Supervisors about help in getting
the scenic designation when they meet in joint session in April.
In other business Tuesday night, Council was advised that the Finance
Committee will continue work on the Town's FY2008-09 budget next
Wednesday, March 19 and again on Wednesday, March 26. The committee
expects to present Council with a draft budget at its April 3 work
session and hold a first reading on the proposed budget at its May 13
meeting. The budget will then be approved at Council's June 10 meeting.
