SATURDAY NIGHT FATALITY — The driver of this 1997 pick-up truck, 52 year

A 52 year old South Boston man died at the scene of a single vehicle
crash on Saturday night, November 10, 2007 after the 1997 S-10 pick-up
truck he was driving hit an embankment on U.S. 501 and overturned.
Willie Lanel Harris of Elliott Avenue died at 9:05 p.m. after his truck
veered off the left side of the roadway about one-eighth mile south of
its intersection with State Route 744. Harris, who was northbound,
overcorrected and the truck then went off the right side, striking the
bank and overturning.
Virginia State Trooper T. C. Comer investigated the accident in which
speed was considered to have been a factor. Harris was not wearing a
seatbelt.
In adjoining Charlotte County a 29 year old Red Oak pedestrian was
killed about 10:42 p.m. also on Saturday night. Vincent Jamaal Winn of
Blue Cedar Lane was walking alongside Route 15, about one-tenth mile
north of its intersection with State Route 631 in Charlotte County when
he was struck by a 2006 Saturn. Winn reportedly was northbound, walking
on the left side of the roadway and wearing black clothing.
The driver did not stop, but proceeded down Route 15 and then turned
off to the right where she abandoned the vehicle which was soon
identified by Deputy John Wright of Charlotte County. Wright caught up
with the driver and a companion as they walked along the roadside.
Nineteen year old Lucy Taylor Hedelt of Fredricksburg who was returning
from Fredricksburg to Longwood College, where she is a student, was
charged with driving under the influence, possession of marijuana, hit
and run felony, aggravated manslaughter (DUI related) and possession of
drug paraphernalia.
Her companion, Carline A. Broome, 20 also of Fredricksburg, was charged
with being drunk in public and with possession of marijuana. Virginia
State Trooper M. C. Forbes was the investigating officer in the
fatality.
