No citizens showed up on Tuesday night to comment on the $1.6
million
budget proposed for the Town of Halifax for the coming fiscal year.
The
budget, which totals a 4.89 percent increase over that of the
current
year, calls for no increases in the real estate tax of 19 cents per
$100 assessed value nor in the personal property tax rate of $1.68
per
$100 value. It also calls for no increases in water and sewer fees
for
in-town or out-of-town customers. The machinery and tool tax rate
also
remains at 40 cents per $100 value.
Council set its June 12 meeting as the date to formally approve the
coming year's budget and to appropriate the money to support it.
In other business Council, following a closed session, named Mayor
Leon
Plaster and Dexter Gilliam to represent the Town on the Public
Service
Authority which will be responsible for overseeing the joint water
and
sewer operations. Plaster's term will be for two years, while
Gilliam's
will be for three. The pair will join Doug Bowman, representing
Halifax
County and three representatives from the Town of South Boston, on
the
Authority. A seventh member will be chosen by the other six.
A $69,187.50 contract was awarded to Grindstaff Underground, Inc. to
complete the town's Fiber Optic Project with the Town being liable
for
somewhere between $14,000 to $30,000 of the costs, dependent on
contributions made by Mid Atlantic Broadband Cooperative and others.
Another contract, this one for $7,550 for the removal of an
underground
storage tank, located off Houston Street, was also awarded to
Dewberry
& Davis.
