The body of 63 year old Robert S. Gluhareff of South Boston was
discovered early Sunday morning, January 13, 2008 in a wooded area off
Edwin Robertson Road in Person County, NC by members of the Person
County Sheriff's Department. Gluhareff was the former head of the now
defunct Wellspring Academy, a school for troubled boys, located in
western Halifax County. His death was attributed to what was believed
to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
According to Chief Deputy Al Rhew, deputies found Gluhareff's body near
a truck that had been seen parked at the site on Friday evening. "We
don't know whether or not the truck had been there the entire time or
if it had been moved and then returned, but it is our policy to check
on vehicles that have been seen at a certain site for a period of
time." Rhew explained his officers searched the site shortly after 7
a.m. on Sunday morning after seeing the truck still sitting in the same
spot.
Asked if his department had been notified of any missing person, Rhew
said they had not, but his officers were simply doing a routine check
when they found the body.
He noted that later they were told that members of Gluhareff's family
had been looking for him.
Back at the end of October Gluhareff had been sentenced to a 30 month
jail sentence and ordered to pay $500,000 in restitution after having
pleaded guilty in the spring to two charges related to bank fraud and
one each to mail and tax fraud with 49 other charges, all related to
Gluhareff's actions at Wellsprings, dropped.
