Founders fails to pay withholding taxes
The Virginia Department of Taxation has filed a lien against Founders
College for failing to pay $11,226 in employee withholding taxes
(including interest and penalties) for August and September of last
year – the same months the college threw a festive gala opening with a
NASA astronaut, an orchestra and colorful hot-air balloons.
The Monday filing in Halifax Circuit Court comes on the heels of a $3
million owner-finance loan default, a $120,000 collection lawsuit by a
former public-relations firm and grumblings around town about old,
unpaid bills.
Founders College, which doubles in part as the upscale Berry Hill
resort, has also seen the exodus of managers and professors. The
start-up, for-profit college opened in September with 12 students – two
of them online – but started the spring semester last month with five
students.
The Monday filing was made by tax compliance agent Steve H. Anderson,
who is also chairman of the Halifax County School Board.
