BURNS HOME WHERE OWNER WAS BORN ó Mrs. Helen Blanks said she was born in
this home on Alderson Avenue which suffered some $60,000 in damages from
fire on Thursday morning.
A family of four lost their home and most of everything they owned on
Thursday morning, December 20, 2007 as a fire swept through their two
story frame home located at 1932 Alderson Avenue in South Boston.
South Boston firefighters received a call to the home at 8:38 a.m.,
only to find heavy smoke and fire showing on the outside of the house.
Responding with 20 firefighters and four trucks, South Boston was
assisted by three firefighters from the Halifax Volunteer Fire
Department. They remained on the scene for over three hours, leaving
around 12:15 p.m. The cause of the fire was still undetermined on
Sunday, according to a department spokesman. One said it appeared to
have started between the two floors of the home. Damages were
estimated at some $60,000.
According to Ginger Weaver, Executive Director of the Halifax-Charlotte
County American Red Cross Chapter, the Red Cross is assisting this
family, just as it has assisted 14 other unfortunate families who lost
their homes to local house fires since July 1, 2007. She noted that the
Chapter is able to provide emergency assistance in the form of food,
shelter, clothing and counseling to those affected.
Mrs. Helen Banks and her family lived in the home, and she sadly
recounted that she had actually been born in this house and had lived
there most of her life.
ì So it was more than a materialistic loss, she said, ìbut also the
loss of life's memories which are too often destroyed by house fires.
